Frankfurt und Leipzig, 1779, viii, 350 pp. *** Written in archaic German, thus difficult for most people to translate. The title in English is COLLECTIONS OF HISTORICAL ACCOUNTS OF THE MONGOL TRIBES. It has a folding engraved frontis. illustration of a Mongol family and their animals outside their yurt. There are what appears to be four (4) geneaological folding charts. In back there are six (6) copperplate engraved, folding plates of Mongols and their artifacts in everyday life. One of the most important and comprehensive works on the peoples of Mongolia and Tibet and also probably the earliest western work devoted exclusively to Mongolia and its inhabitants. Pallas was one of the first to describe Mongolian Lamaism, idolatry, astrology, festivals and celebrations, ceremonies, etc. He conducted his wide-ranging expeditions between 1768 and 1774 through Russia, Siberia, and Mongolia on behalf of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. A rare book! *** This book comes with a clear mylar protective cover. *** Bound in 1/2 brown calf with yellow paper boards, four raised bands on spine with gilt rule and gilt decoration in compartments. Marbled page edges. Most of spine label is missing. Covers have moderate wear and soil. Three small holes in spine. The contents are clean and complete in a good, tight binding. Most of front free end paper has hand written notes in German. This is volume 1 of a two volume set.
