Flore des Serres et des Jardins de lEurope - HOUTTE, Louis van - 1877.
Ghent: Louis van Houtte, 1877 - First edition. 4to, pp [iv], xliv, 236. Recent quarter green morocco on matching cloth boards, edges speckled, half-title and title page present. Volume 22 of this renowned series, containing the obituary notice and appreciation on the late Louis van Houtte at the beginning, with a portrait lithograph. Illustrated throughout with 82 spectacular coloured plates of flowers, trees and plants, of which 27 are folding, either double page or greater. The illustrations include iris, lily, azalea, rose, camellia, and grapes, often strikingly beautiful, such as Pelargonium a grand fleures double (Captain Raikes) with a delicate red, or a clematis with an equally delicate white and violet, and are exceedingly attractive. Houtte specialised in introducing flowers and plants from overseas, and there are examples from across the world, including Java (Bolophyllum Paudi), Turkestan, tropical America, Chile, China/Japan (Iris), Brazil, Canary Islands, Mexico, India, Norfolk Island (Pacific), Cape of Good Hope, California, Rio de Janeiro, Jamaica, Mexico, Rangoon, Siberia, and Asia minor, as well as the Orchis Folosia (Madeira). This example has a recent binding, and please note some of the text leaves facing the plates are a litte dusty, otherwise a very attractive item with all plates intact.
