THE ROMANCE OF HISTORY. FRANCE - Ritchie, Leitch - 1831. [1195587]
Edward Bull, Holles Street, London 1831 - Octavo, three volumes: pp. [i-v] vi-vii [viii] [i-ii] [1] 2-326; [i-vi] [1] 2-350; [i-vi] [1] 2-346, rebound in brown three-quarter leather and green buckram, all edges sprinkled red. First edition. Ritchie retells the history of France as a series of novellas, making free use of the usual techniques of fiction. About a third of his stories are based on legends and supernatural incidents, as indicated by their titles: "The Man-Wolf," "The Phantom Fight," "The Magic Wand" and "The Dream-Girl." The publisher brought out two companion volumes for the histories of England and Italy. Ritchie, a Scot who came to London to seek a literary career, eventually found steady work as an editor of Smith Elder's "Library of Romance" and later of CHAMBERS'S JOURNAL. Block, The English Novel 17401850, p. 190. Not in Sadleir or Wolff. Not listed by the usual bibliographers of fantastic literature, who perhaps considered it as history rather than fiction. (Isn't that usually called "historical fiction"?). Lacking half-titles, spines a bit faded, some acidic offsetting to paste-downs from leather portions of the binding, scattered light foxing, in general a well-bound, clean, very good set. (#147773) [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
