Bound in publisher's attractive gilt decorated navy-blue buckram, top edge trimmed, others deckled. Vol. 1 contains very neatly in ink in the top corner of the front fly: "Philip Merivale / 2nd December 1936 / Chicago Illinois." Merivale (1886-1946) was a star of the London and Broadway stage, film actor, and screenwriter. He was performing in 'Call It A Day' in Chicago at the time. Elegant, near invisible rebacking of the set with full back strips laid on, cover slightly scuffed, small bookseller's ticket to front pastedown of each volume.
