Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1940. 356 pp. Unspecified printing, probably second, of the author's first novel, with no date on title page. Dustjacket is second state, with the original $2.50 price on front flap and advertisement for Reflections in a Golden Eye on rear flap. Inscribed by the author on front free endpaper "For Mary, Aristide, / Micky, Aimee, P[auline] / With all the love you want from me / Carson." McCullers very likely met the American author Mary Mian and her French husband, a sculptor, during her visit to Paris in 1946-8. The Mians' daughters were Miki, Aime and Pauline. Slight lean to spine, stains to spine and portions of covers, small scuff to top edge; light foxing and dustsoiling to covers, page edges, and endpapers; small chips to edges of rear pastedown. Binding sound, pages tanned throughout but unmarked. Jacket stained, soiled, chipped, torn, protected in clear Brodart sleeve. Housed in new custom slipcase. . Inscribed and signed by author. Cloth. Good/Fair. 8vo.
