The Normans in the South, and The Kingdom - NORWICH, John Julius (born 1929) - 1967.
London: Longmans, Green, 1967-1970.. TWO SIGNED FIRST EDITIONS. Later re-published together in a single volume, 'The Normans in Sicily', (1992). Octavo, pp. xvi, 355; xv, 426. SIGNED by the author in black ink to each title page. Orange end-papers. In publisher's black cloth with gilt titles to spine. Both vols. with original pictorial dust jackets. Slight reading lean to each vol.; very light spotting to end-papers of first vol. Minor chipping to head and tail of jacket spine to first vol. Exceptionally bright clean jackets. Very good overall. Viscount Norwich is the son of Conservative politician Duff Cooper. He began a long career as a writer and amateur historian after leaving the Diplomatic Service in 1964. These are his first and third published monographs (not counting 'Mount Athos', 1966, which he wrote with Reresby Sitwell), which constituted the first English-language historical survey of the Norman kingdom of Sicily. Either one of these landmark publications is rare in first edition, especially so signed, and are hardly ever seen together. It is particularly apt that we can offer them for sale this year, shortly after the publication of Norwich's new book on Sicily, and during the British Museum's exhibition 'Sicily: Culture and Conquest.'
