The Prelude, An Autobiographical Poem by - Wordsworth, William - 1915. [1195103]
[Doves Press], [Hammersmith] 1915 - William Wordsworth (1770-1850) helped to launch the Romantic Age in English literature; this work is considered to be his magnum opus. This copy in the original Doves Press vellum binding with "The Doves Bindery" stamped on the rear pastedown, one of 155 copies printed on paper (there were also 10 copies printed on vellum), with a liberal use of red type including fourteen initials, the half-title (following the Table of Contents), the Book titles, Book numbers and titles printed in the margins. First mentioned in 'Prospice', March 1913, in November of 1914 Cobden-Sanderson was correcting proofs, and the work was finally published in November of 1915. (N.B., much of above info from Wiki and Marianne Tidcombe, 'The Doves Press'). ***DESCRIPTION: Bound by the Doves Bindery in full limp vellum with "The Prelude" in gilt on the spine, vintage bookplate on the front pastedown with the initials "A de R" surrounded by a wreath of oak leaves encircled by a ribbon, title page and Table of Contents in black, following half-title and Book Titles in red, as are Book Numbers and Titles in the margins; octavo size (approximately 9.25" tall), pagination: (1)-301, colophon (302). The work is enclosed in a later custom chemise and slipcase of blue cloth, black leather spine label with gilt lettering and gilt decorative top and bottom borders. ***CONDITION: Volume could almost be called fine, as it has a strong, square text block, solid hinges, perfectly straight corners with no rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and other than the bookplate mentioned above it is entirely free of prior owner markings; two small scrapges to the vellum towards the head of the spine, surrounding the title, a gentle bump to the tail of the spine and one small blemish on the front free endpaper, else fine. The custom wallet and matching box are near fine, there is some slight wear to the edges of the box and some scrapes to the leather spine label on the slipcase, but it remains strong and sturdy, and clean thoughout. ***CITATION: Tidcombe DP38, Tomkinson pg. 58. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the Abe standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
