Harper & Brothers, New York 1868 - First US Edition (1868). Considered by T. S. Eliot to be the first detective story (he must not have read Edgar Allan Poe). Book is physically sound with all pages attached. Very Good Minus dark green boards with cross-hatch design with bright gilt title on spine. Cover is uniform in color, but faded and spotted. Pages have spotting as you would expect from a book printed in 1868. Many black & white wood engraving illustrations. Four pages of publisher's ads at front of book.
