Red Harvest - Hammett, Dashiell - 1929.
Alfred A. Knopf 1929 - The first of Hammett's novels. No original jacket, but with new facsimile. Solidly preserved in sturdy brick red cloth covers with iconic yellow crossbones on front. Soundly bound with most of pages still stiff and unopened. Signature on front endpage with some ink offset drops on facing pastedown. Half-title has some fingerprint smudges. Rear endpapers with small foxspots. Covers are structurally good overall with the following assorted cosmetic flaws: the lower front corner has sunfaded in a large semi-circle. The cover cloth is in good condition so the fabric could be re-dyed and restored in that area. Top front has some remnants of paper adhesive, perhaps from a price sticker, and there is a 1/4" ink line at spine gutter. Spine pattern design and lettering are clear, with a small area of lightening at upper spine. Spine ends have some mild fraying. Not a perfect specimen, but a decent copy of a highly collectible American mystery classic. Only 3,000 copies were originally printed. Benefits the Friends of the Albany, CA library.
