Twentieth Century-Fox, Los Angeles 1969 - Revised First Draft for the 1970 film. James Earl Jones (his first starring role) and Jane Alexander (her first film credit and starring role) were both nominated for Oscars, reprising their lead roles from the Broadway production.Jack Johnson (1878-1946) boxed during heavy segregation in the American South, and rose to Heavyweight Champion of the World during the Jim Crow era. The white population was angered by Johnson's victories and his open relationships with white women, thus causing the United States Congress to pass a law in 1912 making it illegal to transport prizefight films across state lines, intending to curtail race riots. "The great white hope" is a reference to the boxer whom whites hoped would finally defeat Johnson. Shot on location in England, Arizona, and California.
