A Study in Scarlet - Arthur Conan Doyle - 1891.
Ward, Lock 1891 - Published in 1891. Second English Edition, being the first fully illustrated edition. 8vo., pp. 224 + (24) catalogue. Printed on high quality paper. Bound in publisher's quarter scarlet cloth, gilt titles to spine, beige buckram boards titled in red, patterned end-papers. With several black and white in-text and full page illustrations. A very good copy with cracks to gutters. One name and date to the half-title page. Some browning to the spine. A little staining to the boards and wear to the edges. A very presentable copy indeed. The second edition has a printed leaf noting the edition as the 'Third Edition, Illustrated'. This is due to Beeton's Annual is listed as the first edition, therefore the 'first' edition of 1888 becomes their 'Second edition' and the second becomes the 'third'. The bibliography as set out above is correct; the Beeton 'edition' being an appearance, and not the first edition in bookform. The same rule applies to other Sherlockian titles such as 'The Sign of Four'. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
