The Limited Editions Club [Printed by the Aldus Printers], New York 1942 - Limited Edition of 1500, this no. 409, SIGNED BY EDWARD WESTON. The importance of Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass" is undisputed, interpreted here with the photography of Edward Weston, who has been called "one of the most innovative and influential American photographers" (N.B., quote from Wiki). A near fine set in the original slipcase. ***DESCRIPTION: Two volumes, each bound in full imitation vellum printed with a photograph by Mr. Weston in green, brown leather spine labels with gilt lettering, endpapers of a very light celadon (as are all the pages), title page printed on an inset of darker green with lettering in black and celadon, frontispiece one of Mr. Weston's photographs, photographs printed on glossy paper (Warren's Lustro Gloss) with the text on Worthy special paper; volumes are quarto sized (approximately 12" tall), pagination is continuous as follows: Volume 1, (i)-xxxii (includes preliminaries, Introduction by Mark Van Doren, and Walt Whitman's Preface to the Edition of 1855), 1-123, Note as to ending of Volume 1 (i); Volume 2, (i-iv), 124-264, Alphabetical List of Titles (1-10), blank (11), colophon page (12); limited edition of 1500 copies, this no. 409, SIGNED BY EDWARD WESTON in green ink. The matching publisher's slipcase is of brown cloth, with a green paper spine label with gold lettering and ruled borders. ***CONDITION: Overall both volumes are near fine, with strong, square text blocks, solid hinges, straight corners with a minimum of rubbing, the interiors are clean and bright, and the set is entirely free of prior owner markings; both volumes have some light rubbing to the head and tail of the spines and minor wear to both spine labels; also with a very small chip at the top of the rear joint of Volume 2 and a small rubbed spot at the middle of the spine also on Volume 2; interiors are fine with just a hint of offsetting from the photographs.
