COSTUME OF THE LOWER ORDERS OF LONDON - BUSBY, THOMAS LORD - 1820.
London. Baldwin and Co 1820 - Quarto 11 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches, handsomely leather bound in recent half red morocco. Title, 2 pages of introduction and 24 fine hand coloured engraved plates, being a frontispiece and 23 plates. All with accompanying text. COMPLETE. The introduction states that these plates were all engraved from pictures of the actual characters and are not taken from memory or imagination- thus a fascinating insight into London life at the end of George III reign. The plates are delicately coloured and stipple engraving has been added to the faces to bring them to life. A mixed edition of first and second impressions of this scarce work. The title is watermaked 1817 and some of the plates are watermarked 1819 but the spelling of the Mat-Man is a second issue. See the bibliographic details in R. V. Tooley English Books with Colour Plates. Two pages repaired and and some scattered soiling and occasional light spotting. A interesting English colour plate book where the leaves of text add a simple life and history to each character portrayed. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
