Titlepage slightly rubbed. Inscribed and signed by Erskine Childers: "For Rachel Warren - From her affectionate Uncle Erskine - Jan. 1904".. Second Impression. London, Smith, Elder & Co., 1903. 8°. Frontispiece Map, XII, 336, (4) pages. Hardcover / Modern grey cloth with gilt lettering and ornament on spine. The modern binding in impeccable condition. New endpapers. The folded Frontispiece - map with minor tear and a coffee-cup - stain. Titlepage slightly rubbed. Inscribed and signed by Erskine Childers: "For Rachel Warren - From her affectionate Uncle Erskine - Jan. 1904". Robert Erskine Childers DSC (25 June 1870 ?- 24 November 1922), universally known as Erskine Childers, was the author of the influential novel The Riddle of the Sands and an Irish nationalist who smuggled guns to Ireland in his sailing yacht Asgard. He was executed by the authorities of the nascent Irish Free State during the Irish Civil War. He was the son of British Orientalist scholar Robert Caesar Childers; the cousin of Hugh Childers and Robert Barton; and the father of the fourth President of Ireland, Erskine Hamilton Childers. In January 1901 Childers started work on his novel, The Riddle of the Sands, but initially progress was slow: it was not until winter of that year that he was able to tell Williams, in one of his regular letters, of the outline of the plot. At the end of the following year, after a hard summer of writing, the manuscript went to Reginald Smith at Smith Elder, but in February 1903, just as Childers was hoping to return to The HAC in South Africa, Smith sent back the novel, with instructions for extensive changes. With the help of his sisters, who cross-checked the new manuscript pages against the existing material, Childers produced the final version in time for publication in May 1903. Based on his own sailing trips with his brother Henry along the German coast, it predicted war with Germany and called for British preparedness. There has been much speculation about which of Childers's friends was the model for "Carruthers" in the novel and it seems that he is based not on Henry Childers but on yachting enthusiast Walter Runciman; "Davies", of course, is Childers himself. Because of The Riddle, Childers was invited to join the Savile Club, then a literary centre in London. Widely popular, the book has never gone out of print and in 2003, several centenary editions were published. The Observer included the book on its list of "The 100 Greatest Novels of All Time". It has been called the first spy novel (a claim challenged by advocates of Rudyard Kipling's Kim, published two years earlier), and enjoyed immense popularity in the years before World War I. It was an extremely influential book: Winston Churchill later credited it as a major reason that the Admiralty decided to establish naval bases at Invergordon, Rosyth on the Firth of Forth and Scapa Flow in Orkney. It was also a notable influence on authors such as John Buchan and Eric Ambler. (Wikipedia) Gretchen Osgood Warren (19 March 1868 ?- September, 1961), the wife of Fiske Warren, was an actress, singer and poet. The daughter of Dr. Hamilton Osgood and Margaret Cushing Osgood of Beacon Hill, Boston, Massachusetts, her younger sister was Mary Alden Childers, the wife of writer and Irish nationalist Robert Erskine Childers. Her nephew Erskine Hamilton Childers served as the fourth President of Ireland from 1973 to 1974. John Singer Sargent, the famed portraitist of Boston's elite, was commissioned by Warren's husband, Fiske Warren to paint her portrait in April 1903. The sitting was done in Fenway Court, then the home of legendary Boston fine arts czar; Isabella Stewart Gardner. Warren is seen seated in a chair with her daughter Rachel Warren. The painting is often considered to be one of Sargent's prime portraits and usually appears in Sargent Estate calendars and postcards. Later she was also photographed by portrait photographer Arnold Genthe. (Wikipedia)

In the letter of thanks that followed the publication of this article, Marcel Proust told George Goyau his philosophical conception of the work of a translator: "You know what I have admiration for Ruskin And as I think each of us has supported. souls he particularly likes, load them know and love, to avoid wrinkling misunderstandings and night, darkness as they say, forgetting, you know what hands - scrupulous - but pious and as soft as I could - I touched on this one ...

In 1895, the magazine between declining and its new director, Edouard Ducoté, uses André Gide. The editorial team is reduced to twelve regular contributors, friends Gide. After many difficulties and attempts to overhaul the editorial team (Remy de Gourmont to make a pass and will also contribute financially in 1905), the Hermitage breathed his last in 1906. The Hermitage manages to detach other important magazines of the time as the Mercure de France or La Revue blanche because it boasts eclectic and apolitical; on its cover, you can also read that it is "the only journal that deals with politics or sociology [but] which deals only with literature and art." His illustrations are small art nouveau, and, true to his state of mind symbolist, employees are more interested in poetry than novel. Tiphaine Samoyault, French literary critic, says that the Hermitage expresses a transition straddles the fin de siècle aestheticism and poetry avant-garde of the 1910s. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information! - [FRENCH VERSION FOLLOWS] Edition originale.

1904. first edition. Two Years Before The Mast Illustrated by Arthur Rackham[RACKHAM, Arthur, illustrator]. DANA, R[ichard] H[enry]. Two Years Before The Mast. London and Glasgow: Collins' Clear-Type Press, [September, 1904]. First edition, first issue. Octavo (7 1/8 x 4 3/4 inches; 181 x 121 mm.). 304 pp. Title-page printed in black without any mention of Arthur Rackham. Eight color plates (all with page numbers in lower right-hand corner).Original red cloth, front cover pictorially stamped with a representation of a whaling ship, with the name SCUD plainly visible on the bows. The ship has three men standing in the bow waiting for a canoe with two Indians, allin dark blue, black and white. The title is in dark blue with white shadows. The spine has a picture of an Indian in blue and white, and the title is in a gold panel with the author's name in full in dark blue below. Some light pencil lining and light marginal foxing throughout, neat repair to inner margin of color-plate facing page 33, otherwise a near fine copy of this rather scarce little book.Latimore and Haskell, page 23. Riall, page 57. Note: There are several bindings of this book. The one at hand seems to combine characteristics from several issues described by Latimore and Haskell. Riall mentions an earlier September 1904 issue, bound in green or pink cloth. The illustrations in the September issue have the number of the page they illustrate in the lower right-hand corner, while there are no page numbers on the plates of the December issue. Later editions have only the name "R.H. Dana" on the spine. This book has always been a bibliographic puzzle, but we are certain that this is one of the earliest printings from September 1904.We have sold (more than thirty years ago) a December 1904 copy with the "Scud" picture on the front cover and with the authors name in full on the spine BUT the title-page was printed in red and black and none of the plates had the page number in the lower right hand corner. This copy had a school prize label dated December 1904.Included is a copy of a book by Captain Mayne Reid entitled The Scalp Hunters: A Romance of Northern Mexico. London and Glasgow: Collins' Clear-Type Press, [n.d.] but ca. 1904. This book is bound in the same red cloth and has the identical design to Two Years Before the Mast on the front cover and the spine.

Harlem (City of New York) Its Origin and Early Annals Prefaced by Home Scenes in the Fatherlands; or, Notices of its Founders before Emigration Also, Sketches of Numerous Families, and the Recovered History of the Land-Titles

New York: Printed for the Author. 1904. First. First edition. Royal octavo. 636pp. Publisher's blue-green cloth gilt. Fold out map. Chipping at the spine ends, but a sound good or better copy, and an interesting one. Contains three bookplates, several clippings about Harlem tipped-in, a legal judgment for a property in Harlem, two advertisements for this book from the author (one corrected by hand, presumably by the author) and of most interest, a Printed Letter Signed by the dedicatee of the book, Edgar Ketchum to John Townsend (one of the three bookplates), introducing Townsend to his friend Riker in 1877, and soliciting him to subscribe to the book. Ketchum was a prominent attorney and abolitionist, from Harlem. Those resentful of his abolitionist stance attempted to burn his house during the Draft Riots. Townsend was most likely John P. Townsend, a civilly prominent New York financier who also wrote on economics. Howes R297. .

         Cabbages and Kings

McClure, Phillips & Co., New York 1904 - First issue, with "McClure, Phillips & Co." imprint on spine. A very near fine copy of author's first book, showing little or no wear, and quite scarce as such. The phrase "Banana Republic" was coined here and is heard today, more than ever. The title is taken from a poem in "Through the Looking glass" by Lewis Carroll: "The time has come," the Walrus said, "To talk of many things; Of shoes and ships and sealing-wax, And cabbages and kings." (The Walrus and the Carpenter). "The incidents embracing as they do, a variety of subjects, hang loosely together, so loosely in fact, that at times one finds no apparent connection between them at all, and yet in the end one sees how each is intimately related to the other.Written by a less able hand than O. Henry's the book might have been a sad jumble, perhaps comprehensible to none but the Walrus - but as it is, one finds a joy in its every obscurity." (Contemporary New York Times Book Review). A beauriful copy; armorial book plate. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Photo Album]: Teen-age Girls Attending the "Queen's School" in Bangkok, 1968 [hand-titled]: "Happiness is Together with All Friends"

Small quarto. Plasticized white paper over flexible boards. 111 black and white photographs. Most are about 2.5" x 3.5", a few larger. Slight soiling to the boards, images are mostly fine, many with ink signatures, but for the most part not obscuring the images. Dated from the inscriptions (in Thai). Each photograph is a portrait of a young girl or group of young girls, apparently prepared as a friendship album for one of the students. After the handwritten title page ("Happiness is Together with All Friends") is a drawing of an orchid, and the single word "Farewell," perhaps this was prepared as a going away album for the lone western (possibly American) girl pictured in the album. The girls, in school uniforms, miniskirts, bathing suits, and other typical late 1960s fashion, are almost all are in Western style clothing. The students are depicted engaging in a variety of activities, playing basketball, baseball, posing with a Jaguar XKE, with pets, with a guitar, on the beach, with a bicycle taxi, etc. Also laid in is a New Year's card, most of the text handwritten in Thai. A nice period vernacular album of adolescent girls engaged in a wide range of activities. The Thai inscriptions in the album indicates that this album depicts girls from the Queen's School. Queen Saovabha Phongsri took a particular interest in the education of women, and in 1904 established the first school for girls in Siam; the "Rajini School" or Queen's School in Bangkok. .
