The Face of the Earth [Das Antlitz Der Erde], 5 Volume Set with Index

Oxford; 1904-1924: Oxford University Press Published from 1904-1924, this was Eduard Suess's monumental contribution that revolutionized geological studies. Initially, scholars were overwhelmed by the evidence because there was no index nor maps in a set that now comes to over 2400 pages.. Volume V not only provides an index but Maps. Map I, for instance, is helpful in portraying Suess' analysis of the earth's surface; Map II, his analysis of Europe, and Map III, the recument sheets of the Alps. Five of the maps are in color and the concise text description adds to the value of the work. Paradoxically, Volume V was printed in a small print run and copies are rare. OCLC shows that only the British Library records the entire five volume set. Here\along with Wegener and Du Toit's Our Wandering Continents, we have the essence of the geological revolution from the end of the Nineteenth Century to Du Toit's work published in 1937. The thoroughness of Suess's work remains essential for a core library on the history of geology. Lester King's work in 1962 sheds some new light but relies upon the work much of which was so carefully recorded that the five volumes have stood the test of time. The original set is rare in fine condition and the unopened issue shows that though Michael G.D. Johnson who notes he owned the complete set in June 1943, it was never used thus accounting for its remarkable condition.. Quarto.

Armorial bookplate of Rodman Wanamaker on front paste-down of each volume. A very fine set.Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States and in many ways was "the First American". A renowned polymath, Franklin was a leading author, printer, political theorist, politician, postmaster, scientist, inventor, civic activist, statesman, and diplomat. As a scientist, he was a major figure in the American Enlightenment and the history of physics for his discoveries and theories regarding electricity. As an inventor, he is known for the lightning rod, bifocals, and the Franklin stove, among other inventions. He facilitated many civic organizations, including Philadelphia's fire department and a university.Franklin earned the title of "The First American" for his early and indefatigable campaigning for colonial unity; as an author and spokesman in London for several colonies, then as the first United States Ambassador to France, he exemplified the emerging American nation. Franklin was foundational in defining the American ethos as a marriage of the practical values of thrift, hard work, education, community spirit, self-governing institutions, and opposition to authoritarianism both political and religious, with the scientific and tolerant values of the Enlightenment. Franklin was the most accomplished American of his age and the most influential in inventing the type of society America would become. His colorful life and legacy of scientific and political achievement, and status as one of America's most influential Founding Fathers, have seen Franklin honored on coinage and the $100 bill; warships; the names of many towns; counties; educational institutions; corporations; and, more than two centuries after his death, countless cultural references.Lewis Rodman Wanamaker (February 13, 1863 ?- March 9, 1928) was a department store magnate in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; New York City, and Paris, France. He was a patron of the arts, of education, of golf and athletics, of Native American scholarship, and was an investor in early aviation. He served as a Presidential Elector for Pennsylvania in 1916.

Spine label chipped, boards somewhat soiled, endsheets darkened, else a good, sound copy, in folding cloth slipcase, morocco label. First edition. One of five hundred copies printed. Inscribed by Lady Gregory on the front free endsheet to Augustus John, a frequent visitor to Coole: "A. E. John from A. Gregory." In spite of the date on the title-page, official publication did not occur until 16 May 1905. Yeats inscribed John Quinn's copy: "Red Hanrahan is an imaginary name - I saw it over a shop, or rather part of it over a shop in Galway village - but there were many poets like him in the eighteenth century in Ireland. I wrote these stories first in literary English but I could not get any sense of the village life with the words. Now, however, Lady Gregory has helped me, & I think the stories have the emotion of folklore. They are but half mine now, & often her beautiful idiom is the better half". WADE 59. MILLER 4.

NAWA ICONES JAPONICORUM INSECTORUM, LEPIDOPTERA SPHINGIDAE

Nawa Entomological Laboratory, Japan 1904 - A scarce and somewhat historic entomological publication concerning the moths and worms of Sphingidae printed in both English and Japanese. Assisting in this work was Charles Rothschild of the famous banking family, who while making a world business tour befriended Yashushi Nawa, an amateur entomologist. At this time the local natural history collections of schools and associations were looked down upon by the burgeoning professional scientists of museums. Rothschild tried to show that these "amateurs" could bring valuable contributions to any scientific field, especially through field experience. Mr. Nawa and Mr. Nagano worked together in producing this work and each gets a one page preface. This work is bound in burgundy library cloth with title in gilt on spine, contains 15, [1] index, [5] colored plates, [49] japanese text, [56] blanks pp. No soft covers, nothing like a traditional title page, light browning at page edges and a little foxing on plate margins and verso.          ILLUSTRATIONS TO SALOME

Melmoth & Co 1904 - First edition of the Salome portfolio. Publisher's green portfolio lettered in gilt to the upper cover. A fine copy. Sixteen loose plates printed on art paper, being the thirteen plates from the John Lane edition of 1894 plus the suppressed plates, "John and Salome" and the alternative "The Toilette of Salome", as well as a reproduction of the original cover design. Melmoth & Co, the publisher's of this portfolio, were in fact Leonard Smithers, Beardsley and Wilde's publisher from 1896 until going bankrupt in 1900. From 1900 Smithers used his stock of Beardsley plates and underground printers to produce unauthorised editions in small limitations. The most notable of these publications is his edition of Salome as is the first to include all sixteen of Beardsley's illustrations. It was produced as a standard edition (250 copies) and a deluxe edition (50 copies) and a small number of portfolios containing the plates (as here). This portfolio is also the first to be produced for the Salome illustrations, anticipating, perhaps inspiring, the authorised version of 1907. Lane, who held the copyright, claimed to have had a 'large proportion' of the edition seized and destroyed, which will account in part for the extreme scarcity of copies. cf. Lasner 59B (does not list the portfolio). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Camera Work: An Illustrated Quarterly Magazine Devoted to Photography (Issue #7)

New York: Alfred Stieglitz, 1904. Issue #7 (July, 1904) of this legendary quarterly. A lavish tribute to early photography, envisioned and published-- as a labor of love-- by Alfred Stieglitz. This copy handsomely rebound in a contemporary-to-the-period gray cloth. The original wrappers have been professionally mounted to the panels, all but convincing us that Stieglitz originally issued this in cloth. A skillful, attractive rebinding. The beautiful gravure plates have held up very nicely as well. Bright and near-immaculate. Tall quarto, deckled edges, crisp, unflecked lettering to the panels. Wonderful period ads (a number of them with plates) devoted to all things photography at the rear. Small name in light pencil (G.P. Pratt) to the front free endpaper. . First Edition.          Italian Villas and Their Gardens [with Letters from Wharton, Parrish]

Century, NY 1904 - The first and only edition of this nonfiction volume, heavily illustrated with photographs, drawings, and 26 full-color plates by Maxfield Parrish. This copy has a three-page autograph letter signed from Edith Wharton tipped in, written to Mrs. Sage, who, along with her husband, were friends of Maxfield Parrish and collectors of his paintings. Wharton's letter is a gracious response: apparently Mrs. Sage had indicated that Wharton's book had been a great help to her and that she was sending Wharton a Piranesi etching of Villa d'Este as a thank you. Also tipped-in is a two-page autograph letter signed from Parrish, written in his elegant, calligraphic hand, and referring to four of his paintings that the Sages own and that Scribner's wanted permission to reproduce. The book has been extra-illustrated, presumably by Mrs. Sage, with images of Italian villas, including a large image of Villa d'Este on the front free endpaper. The owner's small, tasteful bookplate adorns the front pastedown. Minor rubbing to corners and rear board; near fine. A unique copy of this beautiful book, with a history of personal connections to the author and illustrator. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The Songs of Bilitis [Signed by Pierre Louys and Signed by George Seferis]

The Aldus Society, 1904, Hardcover, Book Condition: Very Good, First edition, Illustrated By: Fagan, JamesA Very Good copy of the first UK edition, first printing, and the first edition of the book in English translation (some handling soil, tiny rub at the spine foot, some pushing to the spine ends and bumping to the board corners), SIGNED BY PIERRE LOUYS on the half-title and SIGNED BY GEORGE SEFERIS on the front free endpaper with two drawings and a PRESENTATION TO REX WARNER (a noted British author, Seferis' close friend, and a highly-regarded translator of Seferis' poetry to English) placed by Seferis in Storrs, Connecticut and with five lines written by Seferis in Greek. The book was privately issued by The Aldus Society in a Limited Edition of 1,000 copies (consisting of nine hundred and seventy-one copies on a special paper, with the watermark of the Society, and twenty-six signed and lettered copies, and three author's copies on Imperial Japanese vellum with the initials hand-illumined, of which this is Number 17 (of the 971). No Signature was called for in this copy, yet it has been signed by Louys on the half-title. There being only twenty-six copies expressly called to be signed, excluding this copy, we believe it to be quite scarce. The page edges are watermarked, and the title/limitation page, the frontispiece, and the book's other three full-page illustrations are printed on vellum leaves. While Pierre Louys was a heterosexual, he also was a good friend of Oscar Wilde and Andre Gide and a noted champion of gay & lesbian rights. His poetry and other writings are permeated with erotic and lesbian themes, with "The Songs of Bilitis" being his most famous and most frequently republished work. "Bilitis", the name Louys gave to his fictional Poetess, is presented by Louys as a contemporary of Sappho (herself a Greek lyric poet born between 630 and 612 BC on the Greek island of Lesbos). The book's introduction alleges the 143 poems within to have been written by Bilitis, whose tomb Louys claimed to have been discovered by (his fictional) archaeologist Herr G. Heim. The work shows Pierre Louys' deep knowledge of Ancient Greek culture, and, while written primarily by him, some of the poems are reworked epigrams from the Palatine Anthology (discovered in 1606), and some of the verses were taken from Sappho's work. Upon the work's initial publication (France, 1894), expert scholars were fooled and considered the work to be genuine and the poems to have been authored by Bilitis. Even after Louys' deception was unmasked, enthusiasm for the book's poetry did not wane and the poems, which established Pierre Louys' historic significance as a Poet, continue to be considered an important literary work. The poems comprise three cycles, each of which represents a phase of Bilitis' life: Bucolics in Pamphylia, representing her childhood and first sexual encounters, Elegies at Mytilene covers indulgence in homosexual sensuality, and the final section, Epigrams in the Isle of Cyprus, covers her life there as a courtesan. As noted above, George Seferis, a Greek Diplomat and Ambassador to the UK, one of the Twentieth Century's most important Greek Poets, and the first Greek ever to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature gave this copy to Rex Warner. Both authors were deeply interested in all things related to Cyprus, thus explaining the gift. Signed copies of Pierre Louys' works, issued in French, while not rare, are relatively uncommon. However, signed copies of his works in English translation are real hen's teeth and exceedingly difficult to find. This copy, also having been signed and inscribed by Greece's first Nobel Laureate in Literature, is an extraordinary find. SCARCE to RARE.

         STORIES OF RED HANRAHAN.

Dundrum: The Dun Emer Press, 1904. - Linen-backed boards, paper spine and cover labels. WADE 59. MILLER 4.
