To R Jacobsen, c/o Hide & Leather, Chicago, conveying the book as a Christmas gift, with a manuscript postscript beneath the signature, "Please do not mention in paper." Bookplates of John M. Schiff and another. Custom half morocco slipcase and chemise. STREETER COPY This lavishly produced record of a sporting trip to Yellowstone takes the form of the diary of Detroit industrialist Carl Schmidt, and includes a section on fishing. Chapter 9, pp. 63-72, is entitled "A Fishing Trip." The present copy comes from the celebrated library of Thomas Winthrop Streeter, with his pencil note "Dauber & Pine, June 1953. The color pictures are photochrome prints after photographs by William Henry Jackson who, as the official photographer of the Hayden Survey in the 1870s, took the first photographs of Yellowstone. The photochrome process was invented in Switzerland, and the American rights were purchased by the Detroit Publishing Company around 1895. Jackson served as a director of the newly-created Photochrom Company subsidiary, and praised the photochrome process in his memoirs as a "process hardly improved today." The black and white photographs are by members of the party. An outstanding sporting and Western rarity, with a highly desirable provenance.

History of the Delhi Coronation Durbar Held on the First of January 1903 to Celebrate the Coronation of His Majesty King Edward VII Emperor of India. Compiled from Official Papers By Order of the Viceroy of India.

John Murray, London 1904 - Plan of the Amphitheatre, plate illustrating the Durbar Medal, folding panorama of the Durbar [equivalent to 4 pages], large folding seating plan, folding coloured plan of the arrangement of the Durbar Camps, 30 full plate photogravure portraits by Walker & Cockerell [including the King Emperor, Lord and Lady Curzon and numerous ruling Princes], 18 full plate hlaf tone illustrations from photographs [scenes of the Durbar, processions, etc], xiv, 347pp. Original red cloth gilt but rather worn and faded [especially the spine and the front board], front hinge cracked but holding well, top edges gilt. Internally the book is quite clean, the folded plates are neatly folded and most of the plates retain their paper guards. Unlike many copies of this book the contents are not shaken. It is a very heavy volume and one which was always going to suffer through use. although externally not a particularly handsome copy this is nonetheless the most thorough and authoritative contemporary record of this great imperial event and far superior to modern reprints because of the illustrations. The portraits are not the most obvious subjects and include interesting representatives from distant areas [Kalat, the Shan States, Nepal, the North West Frontier Provin ces, etc] They are also the more interesting for being by a wide range of photographers. The detailed narrative of events is followed by a series of Appendices which detail Official Despatches, the Gazette of India giving honours awarded, lists of officers on special duty in the various camps, and over 30 pages listing Official Guests. This is a good complete copy: often some of the portraits, the panorama, or the attractive coloured plan of the Camps have been detached. This is heavy volume which will require extra shipping costs if sent overseas. Size: Folio [10.5 x 12.5ins] [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Nature of Man. Studies in Optimistic Philosophy. The English Translation Edited by P. Chalmers Mitchell. SIGNED BY ELIE METCHNIKOFF.

London: William Heinemann/ New York: G. P. Putnam’s Sons, 1904. - 1 leaf, xviii, 309 pp, 1 leaf. Original cloth. Glue stain on front cover (probably from removal of a label). Joints rubbed. Corners of covers a little bumped and worn. SIGNED BY ELIE METCHNIKOFF: "A Madame Lydig?/ hommage respectueux/ dévoué/ Elie Metchnikoff." "Madame" has been written over another word. Second Edition--but actually the second printing--of the English translation of Études sur la nature humaine (1903). "After the Immunity [in Infectious Diseases] was finished, Metchnikoff turned his attention to the problems of aging and the idea of death. . . . In a series of books and lectures between 1903 and 1910 Metchnikoff developed his thoughts on the prolongation of life. . . . In his Nature of Man Metchnikoff argued that when diseases have been suppressed and life has been hygienically regulated, death would come only with extreme old age. Death would then be natural, accepted gratefully, and robbed of its terrors" (D.S.B. 9: 334-35). On pp. 297-98 Metchnikoff introduced the term "gerontology" for the scientific study of old age. Metchnikoff, Life of Elie Metchnikoff, pp. 182-89. Elie Metchnikoff shared the Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology in 1908 with Paul Ehrlich, "in recognition of their work on immunity."          SEAL HUNTING LEGISLATION, ALASKA: Collection Including an Autograph Letter Signed by Elliott and Two Printed Legislative Documents with His Manuscript Notes, All Related to the Early Movement to Stop Seal Hunting on the Pribilof Islands, Alaska.]

1904 - The collection includes: 1) Autograph Letter Signed "Henry W. Elliott" to Theodore E. Burton (1851-1929, Republican member of the US House of Representatives at the time). Washington, D.C., 30 January 1904. Octavo (ca. 22,5x13,5). Black ink on lined paper with printed letterhead of the Committee on Rivers and Harbours, House of Representatives. A very good letter. Elliott writes that "this is a perfect vindication of my stand, and urgent demand for the passage of that Seal Bill, which you have heard me talk to you about so much." 2) Report of Committee on Territories Appointed to Investigate Conditions in Alaska. Subcommittee: Senator Dullingham (Chairman), Senator Burnham, Senator Nelson, Senator Patterson. January 12, 1904. Washington: Government Printing Office, 1904. Octavo. 32 pp. With a large folding map of Alaska. Original publisher's wrappers. Elliot's manuscript note on the front wrapper and markings on p. 23. Back wrapper with minor tears and losses, but overall a very good copy. 3) Dillingham. S. 3355. A Bill to amend an Act entitled "An Act to prevent the extermination of fur-bearing animals in Alaska, and for other purposes." January 12, 1904. Folio. 5 pp. Elliott's manuscript note on the "title" page. Folded twice, fold marks, minor tear on the upper fold, otherwise a very good copy. A historically significant collection assembled by American artist, naturalist and early conservationist H.W. Elliott, which gives good insight into the early movement to ban seal hunting on the Pribilof Islands, Alaska. A year later, in 1905 Elliott together with US Secretary of State John Hay authored a document which eventually became the North Pacific Seal Convention (1911). It outlawed free-water seal hunting and became the first international treaty dedicated to the conservation of wildlife. The collection shows Elliott's initial efforts to start the process and includes the report of the U.S. Senate Committee which visited the Pribilof Islands and recommended "a suspension of all killing by the lessees of the Seal Islands be made at once and indefinitely," a rare imprint of the Senate Bill amending "An Act to prevent the extermination of fur-bearing animals in Alaska," and Elliott's letter to an Ohio representative encouraging him to support the bill. Nowadays the Pribilof Islands are a part of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, and the seal herd is generally subject only to subsistence hunting by the native Aleut population.
