         Sebastian Melmoth

London: Humphreys, 1904 - First. Sm. Quarto. pp. [iv], 223. Bookplate on front pastedown. Bound by Hatchards of Picadilly in cont. half brown morocco gilt, light brown linen covers, brown silk marker. Original wrappers bound in at end. T.e.g. Very good. In 1895 while enjoying the success of ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’, Wilde allowed himself to be lured into a libel action against Douglas’s father, the Marquis of Queensberry, who had strenuously objected to his son’s relationship. Queensberry left a card in the Albemarle Club inscribed “To Oscar Wilde, posing as a sodomite”. The case proved a disaster, and was unsuccessful for Wilde following a devastating cross-examination by Edward Carson. Wilde in turn was charged with gross indecency and was sentenced to two years penal servitude with hard labour. On his release from prison he immediately left England and, bankrupt and homeless, spent the rest of his life wandering aimlessly about Italy and France, sometimes with Douglas, sometimes with Ross, using the pseudonym ‘Sebastian Melmoth’. Wilde died of cerebral meningitis at the Hotel d’Alsace in November 1900, where he received the last rites of the Roman Catholic Church. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

         Photograph Signed

np np: np. First Edition. nb. Very Good. ONE OF THE EARLIEST KNOWN SIGNED PHOTOS OF WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS. A rare gelatin silver print bust portrait of Yeats as a young man, signed and inscribed by Yeats to U.S. politician and later U.S. secretary of state Bainbridge Colby: "To Mr. Bainbridge Colby with kind regards from WB Yeats March 1904." Inscribed in ink on the flush board mount beneath the photograph. The photograph is undated but likely predates the inscription by a few years: c.1900, when Yeats was in his mid-thirties. On the verso of the photograph mount is written in pencil: "Young Yeats photo by [????] not to be used without Mr. Yeats permission." (We have not been able to determine the identity of the photographer.) Yeats traveled to the U.S. for the first time from November 11, 1903 - March 9, 1904, where he presumably met Bainbridge Colby. Colby (1869-1950) was a young and successful lawyer with many well-known clients (including Mark Twain). By 1904 he had already entered politics, having just concluded a term as a member of the New York State Assembly. He would later ascend to U.S. Secretary of State (1920-1921) under Woodrow Wilson and was a champion of the women's suffrage movement. (It was Colby who issued the proclamation announcing that the 19th amendment granting women the right to vote had been ratified.) Gelatin silver print on original board mount. c.1900. Archivally framed with UV-protected museum glass. Photo including margin with inscription: 8.5x11in. Photo alone: 7x9in. Framed: 14.5x17.5in. Toning to mount, some abrasions to photo. AN EXTREMELY RARE EARLY SIGNED PHOTO OF YEATS.

Bibliographisches Institut 1904-1908, Leipzig und Wien - Meyers Großes Konversations-Lexikon. Sechste (6.) gänzlich neubearbeitete & vermehrte Auflage. Eierstabausgabe, 20 Bände (A-Z). Leipzig und Wien, Bibliographisches Institut, 1905-1908 (über die Hälfte Neuer Abdruck). Original-Halblederbände mit Goldprägungen (u.a. Kleinere Beschädigungen an folgenden Stellen: An zwei bedruckten Seidenpapieren eine bzw. mehrere Stellen & an zwei Abbildungen mittig bzw. an mehreren Stellen. 50000 Gramm. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

         Vanishing Race ? Navaho

1904. Original sepia toned photograph. Sheet size: 26.5 x 34.5 cm. Framed size: 35 x 43.5 cm. In excellent condition. Mounted and presented in a brown wooden frame with conservation glass. Original sepia photograph, signed by Curtis in black ink in the lower right-hand corner. This is one of the most iconic images from Curtis's monumental undertaking to document the life and culture of the North American Indians at the beginning of the 20th century. This particular photograph was later reproduced in the first volume of The North American Indian (Cambridge, MA., 1907) and entitled "Vanishing Race ? Navaho". The image was selected in Time Magaine's 100 Photos: The Most Influential Images of All Time: "No single image embodied the project better than The Vanishing Race, his picture of Navajo riding off into the dusty distance. To Curtis the photo epitomized the plight of the Indians, who were "passing into the darkness of an unknown future." Alas, Curtis' encyclopedic work did more than convey the theme?it cemented a stereotype. Railroad companies soon lured tourists west with trips to glimpse the last of a dying people, and Indians came to be seen as a relic out of time, not an integral part of modern American society. It's a perception that persists to this day.

         CABBAGES AND KINGS

, 1904. 1904. New York: McClure, Phillips & Co., 1904. Original black cloth pictorially decorated in orange, green and yellow. First Edition of "O. Henry's" first book -- "a series of stories of revolution and adventure in Central America, integrated by a loose general plot and a single group of characters into the form of a novel" [OCAL]. (It is on page 147 of this book that the author coined the phrase "banana republic.") Born in North Carolina, Porter went to Texas to seek his fortune but wound up as a bank teller in Austin (writing a humorous column for a newspaper on the side); there he was indicted for bank embezzlement in 1896. He fled to Honduras to escape prosecution, but returned because his wife was on her deathbed, at which time he was imprisoned for three years -- after which (in 1902) he went to New York to pursue a literary career instead. He was to live only eight more years.~CABBAGES AND KINGS (the title comes from Lewis Carroll's "The Walrus and the Carpenter") draws upon Porter's years of self-imposed exile in Central America. The book was unfortunately produced by the same publisher, in similar black cloth for a binding, as THE RETURN OF SHERLOCK HOLMES (McClure Phillips, 1905) -- which like this is a notoriously difficult book to find in fine condition, owing to the dulling and flaking of colors against a black background.~This however is a just-about-fine copy (the slightest of cover soil), with the colorful front cover illustration (by William Jordan, so initialed) quite sharp; the orange spine lettering as always does not stand out well against the black background. Blanck 16270. Housed in a morocco-backed slipcase, this copy bears the small leather "Blairhame" bookplate of the noted collector Mrs. J. Insley Blair.

Santander-Mediterranean Railway - Tunnels and Bridges in Spain - Includes Photos of Previous Family Works in South America - Port Construction and Early Steamships

Spain, Brazil, circa 1904-1931. Engineering plans, manuscript drawings, photographs, certificates, letters and ephemera of English engineer Louis Marshall Bainton mainly pertaining to an important railway project in Spain, with some additional photographs from various other engineering works in Spain, and also featuring several photographs from his father's earlier maritime engineering work in Argentina and Brazil, as well as a few notable early nineteenth century inventions. Photograph album contains 85 views; a separate lot of additional photographs numbers 34 views; some images are captioned in English. Oblong 8vo. string-tied brown cloth Westminster album measuring approximately 26 x 21 cm. Most documents and letters are in Spanish, two being in English, the lot also ranging in size and format. A fascinating and uncommon engineering archive. Bainton's personal archive forms a rare firsthand memorial to the construction of the Santander-Mediterraneo railway across the Iberian Peninsula, a project designed to connect the Bay of Biscay with the Mediterranean Sea for improved trade and coast-to-coast communications. The idea for the railway was conceived in the nineteenth century, and finally began coming to fruition in 1924, as a joint Anglo-Spanish effort. Primarily designed for cargo transport, plans evolved to include passenger service and tourism for increased commercial gain. The rail line was to connect Santander, Burgos, Soria, and Calatayud. The archive consists of the following: Two official planning and blueprint guidebooks printed by the railway company for engineers only, containing detailed specifications and instructions, 46 pages of text plus 28 drafting plans in both volumes combined. These are two rare volumes, printed in Burgos, 1927, which reveal much of the planning for the train stations, including the tracks, trains and their speed, ascents and descents, scheduling, space allocated for travel agents and medical services, special requirements, and more. Nine manuscript pencil drawings for the planning of tunnels, including entrances, support systems, and drilling specifications, drawn by Bainton, each on a leaf measuring 18 x 12,5 cm and captioned in English. Together with a copy of a paper published in the Engineering and Mining Journal-Press titled, "Tunneling Operations at Big Creek, California" by American mining engineer E. D. Gardner (5 pages with illustrations), from which Bainton was gathering planning ideas. Lot of 34 gelatin silver print snapshot photographs taken at various worksites in Spain, some on the Rio Jalon and Rio Duero, illustrating the machinery used, construction methods, and the general conditions of the land. In at least one of the photographs we see camels being used for labour. Twelve views are captioned in English to verso. These vary in size from 8 x8 cm to 8,5 x 13,5 cm. One fascinating photograph album featuring numerous engineering works from the turn of the century to circa 1930. The volume begins with 59 sepia photographs taken in South America by Bainton's father who was an engineer before him, featuring early port construction and several rare photographs of the Brazilian cargo steamship Parahyba (1874-1911) which was built in England, last owned by Cia de Comercio e Navegacao, Rio De Janeiro, and lost in a fire at sea off the coast of Sergipe, Brazil while transporting sugar and cotton to Rio de Janeiro. To his father's maritime engineering album, Bainton Jr. adds 16 spectacular railway engineering photographs, illustrating the construction of new railway lines, bridge works, and passenger stations. Evidently making a tour of Spain for investigative research, views of a Madrid road bridge, the Ciruelas bridge (80 km from Madird) in the province of Guadalajara, and the Salas passenger station are captioned by Bainton and dated July 30th 1926. Loosely placing them between the blank leaves, most of these photographs are professional large format views, ranging in size from 16,5 x 11 cm to 24 x 17 cm, one of which is signed and captioned to verso in red ink by Bainton at Burgos. The album contains further photographs of engineering inventions of the period, such as a Beardmore 120 hp engine produced from 1914 to 1918 and used to power aircraft. [Louis Marshall Bainton's father, Louis H. Bainton, was the Chief Mechanical and Electrical Engineer on port construction projects in Rio de Janeiro from 1904-1913, and in Buenos Aires from 1913-1915, for the London firm C. H. Walker, Ltd.. Letters and photographs of his work are held at Special Collections Library, University of California, Santa Barbara.] A personalized invitation/ticket to the inauguration of the Cabezon de la Sierra-Soria section of railway, a ceremony held in March 1929. Stamped by the company, torn in half by the host to confirm attendance. Documents relating to Bainton's personal credentials: •His typed cdv completed circa 1930 after his three years work on the Spanish railway •Two certificates for operating industrial motorized vehicles, issued, signed and stamped in Spain, measuring 11 x 19,5 cm. •One manuscript letter of praise from David Gilmour, an administrator of the Anglo-Spanish Santander-Mediterraneó Railway Company, and three other letters of recommendation in typescript. Gilmour writes, "Dear Mr. Bainton, As I am leaving Burgos shortly now I cannot do so without telling you that your association with the Sección de Construccion of the Santander-Mediterraneo as Chief Mechanical Engineer has been entirely satisfactory... Your wide experience in the various branches of engineering have been applied to our construction requirements with resource, energy and success... you and your Department..." Louis Marshall Bainton (born 1906), was the chief mechanical engineer on the construction of the Burgos to Cabezon railway in the 1920s He began his engineering apprenticeship in 1924 through Davey, Paxman & Company, Standard Iron Works, Colchester, earning his certificate in 1927. A manuscript letter in this archive suggests that the company was involved in the Santander-Mediterraneó railway project, on which Bainton began working in 1924, at the very start of the project. He was subsequently employed directly by the Anglo-Spanish Construction Co. Ltd. of London, working for a further three years (1927-1930) on the Santander-Mediterraneó railway project in Spain as Assistant Mechanical Engineer on the Burgos-Cabezón section. The Santander-Mediterráneo railway was purposed with joining the seaports of Santander and Valencia with a 732 km line, thereby facilitating rapid transportation of cargo between two of Spain's principle seaport cities on opposite coasts. While a merchant ship would require a week to navigate around the coast of the Iberian Peninsula, the train could cross land in but a few hours. The project dates back to the 19th century. Following a public bidding in 1924, the work finally started, during the dictatorship of Miguel Primo de Rivera. A railway between Sagunto (only 30 miles from Valencia) extending to Calatayud was already in place, and would become a segment in this trans-peninsular line. By the end of 1930, most of the line was complete. The final 63 kilometres (39 mi) to construct was the stretch between Cidad de Valdeporres and the city of Santander. However, to traverse the Cantabrian Mountains and rugged terrain around it would require the several tunnels and viaducts. Various options were proposed and it was eventually decided to build a railway line with 32 tunnels between Santelices and Boo, including the Engaña Tunnel. Indeed this final section proved to be the most challenging, the construction of the famous Engaña Tunnel in and of itself lasting over seventeen years, from 1941 to 1959, employing hundreds of workers, including Republican prisoners during the first years, and still never seeing completion as the rail ties were never laid. At the time of its construction, and until recently, the Engaña Tunnel was the longest railway tunnel in Spain, with a length of 6,976 metres (22,887 ft). Some parts of the Santander-Mediterráneo railway are still in use today, though most of its lines were closed for economic reasons in 1984, at the behest of Enrique Barón, Minister of Transport, Tourism and Communications, in the government of Prime Minister Felipe González Márquez (PSOE). In 1925, the Spanish firm, Compania del Ferrocarril Burgos-Soria-Catalyud, Societe Anonima Santander-Mediterrane, bought four Babcock & Wilcox locomotives for the railway.

Zemskaia kampaniia i plan "Iskry" [The zemstvo campaign and the plan of "Iskra" -- German title: Liberale Bewegung und der Plan von "Iskra"].

Geneva: Izdatel'stvo sotsial'demokraticheskoi partiinoi literatury V. Bonch-Bruevicha i N. Lenina; Kooperativnaia Tipografiia 1904 - Small octavo (17.8 × 11 cm). Original staple-stitched self-wrappers; [3], 26, [2] pp. Printed on thin onion-skin paper. Light wear and spotting; corners somewhat creased; tiny nick to front wrapper. First and only edition of Lenin's sharp and witty denunciation of the so-called "zemstvo campaign" advanced by the Geneva-based Menshevik journal "Iskra" ("The Spark"). In a letter dated November 1904, the editors presented a plan for influencing the non-revolutionary "bourgeois opposition" in Russia by disseminating the demands of the Social Democrats through local zemstvos and discussions among intelligentsia. It was hoped to thereby stimulate liberal politicians to vote according to Social-Democrat views. In his response, Lenin fiercely ridicules the Mensheviks' ignorance of the shortcomings of liberal democracy, as well as the impracticality of tasking local zemstvos with emboldening and influencing local politicians. The front wrapper features the printed note "Only for party members"; this, as is revealed on p. 26, is a witty pun on the fact that Iskra's zemstvo plan, which was meant to be democratically disseminated across Russia, was issued with a similarly conspiratorial disclaimer, a fact Lenin finds plainly ridiculous. Item 747 in the Bernstein and Souvarine catalog, which notes that the pamphlet was distributed illegally among local party offices in Russia and "played an important role in building up the Bolshevik iron discipline" and in convincing the socialists that "pressure must be applied to the government, not liberals" (p. 126). He was an intelligent observer --- this is one of the better books on the Gold Rush, and now quite scarce. Some light foxing to the front and rear endpapers, cloth lightly rubbed, a few pages carelessly opened, color folding map in fine condition, overall a very good copy.
