         Wall Street Speculation

1904 - KEYES, Franklin C. Wall Street Speculation. Its Tricks and Its Tragedies. A Lecture. Oneonta, New York: Columbia, 1904. Slim octavo, staple-bound as issued, original printed cream paper wrappers. $1800.First edition of this early cautionary work on speculation, warning against getting drawn in by the lure of gambling in the market. While many warned about speculation in the wake of the Wall Street Crash of 1929, few saw the dangers as early as Franklin Keyes in 1904. This slim work attempts to cast highlight both the practical and moral dangers of speculation. Keyes shows how the real-life transactions work in a unregulated, speculative market and how so many of them are little more than trickery, meant to defraud an honest, but uninformed, businessman. Keyes, a lawyer, was unable to stop his contemporaries from throwing their savings into the market, but many of his lessons about attempting to profit quickly at the edges of the market remain as pertinent as ever. Early title page owner signature. Front wrapper price of "25 cents" covered over in black, likely by original bookseller.Interior quite nice with slight staple rust as usual, only minor soiling and rubbing mainly to extremities of wrappers. An extremely good copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Die Architektur des XX Jahrhunderts: Zeitschrift für moderne Baukunst.

Large portfolios (493 x 324 mm), each in the publisher's original printed card wrappers with flaps, comprising thirty-eight parts (four to a year), covering the years 1904 -1913 and the first half of 1914, each part containing 25 large, titled b/w photo plates (950 in total), printed on thick card, each part preceded by extensive, descriptive letterpress with text in German, French and English (parts 4-9) German text only from parts 10-14, illustrated with plans, sections and elevations and photo figures, all loose as issued; ex- Bradford Public Library but without stamps, neat ink accession numbers to the upper corners of the front wrappers; a few closed tears to the wrappers of the early parts, otherwise a particularly bright, fresh set. First published in 1901, the present substantial run commences in 1904 and terminates with the last part published in June 1914, just prior to the outbreak of the Great War the following month. The journal's editor Hugo Licht (1841-1923), was an architect, teacher and Leipzig's Director of Municipal Building. His principal buildings designed in a monumental classical style include the city's Music Conservatory, the Grassi Museum and the City Hall. Die Architektur provides a wealth of descriptive and illustrative information on German, north European and American architecture of the period. As Barbara Miller Lane notes in the Macmillan Dictionary of Architects (Macmillan, 1982), it was 'as an architectural publicist and editor that Licht had his greatest influence. Very early in his career, Licht had developed close ties to the Ernst Wasmuth publishing house in Berlin; out of this relationship came a long series of extensive compilations of drawings and photographs of German architecture, which helped to make German architects aware of each other and to make their accomplishments available to the outside world. These compilations stressed new building types - office buildings, stores and factories - and contributed to the view that such buildings could legitimately be seen as "high architecture." In 1901 Licht persuaded Wasmuth to begin publishing Die Architektur des XX. Jahrhunderts: Zeitschrift für moderne Baukunst... , an extraordinarily lavish journal consisting principally of photographs, with accompanying commentary in three languages. Under Licht's direction, Die Architektur.., launched the careers of many young architects in Germany and did more than any previous journal had done to overcome provincialism in German architecture'. We have only been able to locate one complete run of the journal, that held by Nottingham University Library. In the one other instance where the run is complete it appears to lack two of the photo plates. Other institutions hold runs substantially smaller than the one offered here.

         THE HOLY OFFICE.

Privately printed for the author [1904 or 1905] - 4to. The first extant printing of the author's second separate publication. Slocum & Cahoon A2. Preceded only by "Et Tu, Healy," which was privately printed by Joyce's father when his precocious son was but nine years old. Though it is known to have existed, no one has ever seen a copy of this juvenile effort. The circumstances under which the argumentative and irreverent "The Holy Office" was printed were spelled out by Joyce's brother, Stanislaus. After its composition, Joyce commissioned the broadside's printing in Dublin, but because the then-indigent Joyce could not come up with the wherewithal to pay the printer, he never received the copies, which presumably, were deep-sixed. No copy is known to have survived. Years later, Joyce, now solvent and living in Pola, had the poem printed again, the copies of which he and his brother distributed through the mails to members of the author's literary circle. Joyce's bibliographers estimate that fewer than 100 copies were produced. Fine. Housed in a custom-made cloth chemise. Among the rarest of the author's primary publications [Attributes: First Edition]

Agricultural and Pastoral Prospects of South Africa.

London: Archibald Constable & Co. Ltd,, 1904. Octavo. Original green cloth, title to spine and front cover green. Bookplate to front pastedown. Spine faded, spine ends frayed, board edges toned, edge of text block and contents lightly foxed, rear hinge split but holding. A very good copy. First edition, first impression, one of 2,000 copies. Inscribed by Owen Thomas on the front free endpaper, "To Captain Hon. C. J. White, with the author's compliments. Fawley, Henley-on-Thames. 14 Oct. 1904." White (1860?1930) joined the British South Africa Company Police in April 1891, and was appointed commissioner of the Mashonaland Mounted Police (later the Rhodesian Mounted Police) in January 1893; he relinquished his command at the time of the Jameson Raid (1895-6), with some speculation that he was complicit in its planning. Wills notes that "since 1895 White has been connected with several business undertakings in Rhodesia." With White's bookplate to the front pastedown. The book was ghost-written by Rolfe for Colonel Thomas, an adviser to the Rhodes Trustees; the commission resulted in court action by Rolfe for non-payment.

ABC in Dixie. A Plantation Alphabet.

      - London, Nister; NY, Dutton [1904?]. Quarto publisher's cloth backed illustrated boards; 28 leaves, including title, printed in colour with illustrations facing a verse for each letter of the alphabet. With the dedication leaf which doesn't seem to be in all copies. A touch of wear to the spine top and edges, a remarkably good copy. Some while ago I catalogued what I called not the greatest copy - I was yet to see the greatest copy. This may be it. A masterpiece of the unacceptable. The illustrations are charming pieces of coonery but the verses are sometimes breathtaking in their casual continuation of a time long gone by 1900. The only two unhappy and ragged characters are Victor, who belonged to Mars Lee and went up north atter de wah to be free, and lazy shiftless Felix. The happy are those who stayed with their former owners and worked. All but Quentin who was born free and always put on airs. This was transformed into postcards and the Bontes also produced a Coon Calendar for 1905, presumably using the same illustrations but I'm yet to see any copy of that. I don't think this was a great success. Cute as it is, maybe such a irredeemable lament for the passing of slavery was too discomforting even for lovers of Sambo books.

         Tale of Peter Rabbit.

Philadelphia: Henry Altemus Company, 1904. - American Printing of 'Peter Rabbit'In the Original Dust JacketPOTTER, Beatrix. The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Altemus' Wee Books for Wee Folks. Thirty-one Illustrations. Philadelphia: Henry Altemus Company, 1904. First Edition Printed in America, second format (printed ca. 1905).Sixteenmo (5 7/16 x 4 inches; 138 x 103 mm.). [3]-127, [3, blank] pp., including thirty-one color plates after the designs by Potter, and Peter Rabbit vignette on half-title. Text printed in black.Publisher's medium green cloth, cover stamped pictorially in black, white, blue, and red, spine and front cover lettered in red. Pictorial end-papers printed in orange, not of Potter's design. Original beige dust jacket, printed in green, red and yellow, with Altemus advertisement on back panel, Peter Rabbit picture and lettering on front, and "Altemus' Wee Books Peter Rabbit No. 3" lettered on spine. Jacket very slightly chipped at spine extremities, with minimal loss. With a Christmas, 1907 ink inscription on blank verso of frontispiece. A wonderful copy of this juvenile classic in the rare pictorial dust jacket. We presume our copy to have been published in 1905 as the last title listed on the rear panel of the dust jacket is "Who Killed Cock Robin" which was published in 1905."When Frederick Warne first published Peter Rabbit in London [in 1902], they sent a few copies to their firm in New York where, due to a misunderstanding, they were unfortunately sold before copyright was properly obtained. And for that reason the copyright for the book remains to this day in 'public domain' in the United States" (Quinby, p. 18). Altemus was the first to take advantage of this situation, copying the text and illustrations from Warne and issuing in 1904 not only the first pirated edition, but also the first edition printed in America. This edition was reprinted for several years without changing the "1904" date on the title-page. "Aletemus published Peter Rabbit in three different formats, The first format which is the rarest was published only in 1904" This little book had a gray cloth over floral boards, front cover with an oval color illustration of Peter Rabbit pasted-on. "By the end of 1904, Altemus had begun publishing the second format of the Wee Books for Wee Folks Series. Initially the book had a green cover The inside of the book was identical to the first edition book. Between 1908-1912, Altemus published Peter Rabbit with a whitish/beige designed cover. This latter book dropped the decorated end papers. The illustrations are the same for the first three books. These books also have the curious set up such that there is a picture opposite of each page of text and then two blank pages. By 1917 a third format of the second edition was published. This blue book dropped the blank pages and the illustrations are different from preceding volumes. This book and all that followed it had 63 pages. The previous books had 123 pages."
