The Works of Ben Jonson With Notes, Critical and Explanatory, and a Biographical Memoir

London - John Camden Hotten 1877 - A lovely3 volume set of Ben Jonson's works with critical notes by English critic William Gifford. The volumes feature the likes of 'Sejanus,His Fall' (1603),'The Masque of Blackness'(1605), and'The Golden Age Restored' (1616). Ben Jonson (1572 1637) was a playwright, poet, and literary critic of the seventeenth century, whose artistry exerted a lasting impact upon English poetry and stage comedy. He popularised the comedy of humours. He is best known for the satirical plays 'Every Man in His Humour' (1598), 'Volpone', or 'The Foxe' (1605), 'The Alchemist' (1610), and 'Bartholomew Fayre: A Comedy' (1614), and for his lyric poetry; he is generally regarded as the second most important English dramatist, after William Shakespeare, during the reign of James I. The literary artist Ben Jonson was a classically educated, well-read, and cultured man of the English Renaissance with an appetite for controversy (personal and political, artistic and intellectual) whose cultural influence was of unparalleled breadth upon the playwrights and the poets of the Jacobean era (16031625) and of the Caroline era (16251642). William Gifford (1756 1826) was an English critic, editor and poet, famous as a satirist and controversialist. Complete in three volumes. Condition: In a half-calf binding with marble boards. Externally very smart with minor shelfwear only. Internally firmly bound with bright and clean pages throughout, save for slight browning due to age, particularly to first and last few pages as usual. Off-setting from title page on all volumes. Identical ink inscription to front free-endpaper on all volumes. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Capital: a Critical Analysis of Capitalist Production. Translated from the third German edition, by Samuel Moore and Edward Aveling. And edited by Frederick Engels.

London: Swan Sonnenschein, 1877 - 2 volumes, octavo. Publisher's red cloth, spines lettered gilt, rebacked preserving the original spines, new endpapers. Spine ends skilfully repaired, evidence of library lending labels to front covers having been removed, still a very attractive set. Library stamp of the Liverpool Lyceum to both title pages, dated December [18]89 and with their embossed blindstamp to the blank margin of a few leaves. First edition in English of the first part of Marx's landmark Das Kapital, the only part published in his lifetime, containing substantial revisions made by Marx for the first French translation, this two-volume work edited by Engels and translated from the third German edition. A very scarce and important printing of a seminal work in economic and political thought. The present translation was reproduced, with corrections, to form the first complete English Capital. Based on the third German edition, but also inclusive of the substantial changes which Marx introduced for the French translation of 1872-5, it remained the standard text for the English-speaking public, and continued to be revised and republished as the authority text, until the 1950s.          The Life and Confession of of John D. Lee, the Mormon. With a Full Account of the Mountain Meadows Massacre and Execution of Lee. . Helpless Women and Children Butchered in Cold Blood by Merciless Mormov Assassins.

Barclay & Co. Publishers [1877], Philadelphia - First edition. Octavo. 19-64 pp. Plus four lurid full-page woodcut illustrations of the dastardly deed. Publisher's printed sage wrappers with an illustration of Lee on the front and a repeat of plate 2 on the rear. Contemporary signature of Rufus Merrifield on title page and front inner wrapper (not objectionable). Small divot from gutter margin of front wrapper. Overall, a very good copy of this very rare item.Flake 4686 (only locating 6 copies). It was later reprinted in "Mormonism Unveiled".The Mountain Meadows massacre was a series of attacks on the BakerÐFancher emigrant wagon train at Mountain Meadows in southern Utah. The attacks culminated on September 11, 1857, with the mass slaughter of most in the emigrant party by members of the Utah Territorial Militia from the Iron County district. The wagon trainÑcomposed almost entirely of families from ArkansasÑwas bound for California on a route that passed through the Utah Territory during a conflict later known as the Utah War. After arriving in Salt Lake City, the BakerÐFancher party made their way south, eventually stopping to rest at Mountain Meadows. While the emigrants were camped at the meadow, nearby militia leaders, including Isaac C. Haight and John D. Lee, made plans to attack the wagon train. The militiamen attacked the emigrants. Intending to leave no witnesses and thus prevent reprisals, the perpetrators killed all the adults and older children (totaling about 120 men, women, and children). Seventeen children, all younger than seven, were spared. Only John D. Lee was tried in a court of law. After two trials in the Utah Territory, Lee was convicted by a jury, sentenced to death, and executed by Utah firing squad on March 23, 1877.

London, printed for private circulation only (by Maclure & Macdonald), 1877-1882.. 2 vols. Large folio (495 x 370 mm). (44) ff. of English text, (58) ff. of Persian text, 117, (1) pp. (48) ff. of English text, (26) ff. of Hindi text, (2), 45, (1) pp. With 2 lithogr. title pages, 2 lithogr. frontispiece portraits of Queen Victoria (double-tinted lithograph) and Albert Edward, Prince of Wales (chromolithograph), and 24 photographic portraits (woodburytypes), 17 chromolithogr. coats of arms, 51 photographic views (woodburytypes), 1 lithogr. view, 2 maps and 4 genealogical tables (3 double-page). With the portraits and the text of the cantos in elaborate and finely illuminated chromolithogr. borders (with gold); the other text leaves within red borders. With the extensive Persian and Hindi texts lithographed from calligraphic models. Contemp. green morocco, each board with large gold-tooled centre-piece representing the star of India, with in the centre the monogram "VRI" ("Victoria Regina Imperatrix"), gold-tooled fillets, gold-tooled spine with title and author in second and third of six compartments, gilt edges (signed at the foot of the front turn-in by Morley, Oxford).. A sumptuous and extremely rare tribute to the British Raj and a detailed history of the princely families in India by the distinguished orientalist Edward Backhouse Eastwick (1814-83), prompted by the proclamation of Queen Victoria as Empress of India in 1876. The first volume contains three cantos, with a translation into Persian verse by Amir Jan, followed by a history of the Nizams of the Dakan; the second volume contains cantos IV and V with a translation into Hindi verse by Kaviraja Syamala Dasa of Udaipur, followed by a history of the Rajputs. - The work is beautifully decorated, and illustrated with fine photographic views of palaces, tombs, gates, etc., including the mausoleum of the Emperor Humayun, the tomb of Nizamu'd-din, the caves of Ajanta, the Palace of Nizam, the Hall of the 66 pillars and the Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in India. It further includes photographic portraits and finely chromolithographed coats-of-arms of several members of the English and Indian aristocracy. - The "List of subscribers to the Kaisarnamah i hind and distribution of copies", included in the first volume, lists only 107 copies, which explains its rarity. - Edward Backhouse Eastwick spent some six years in India, serving first as cadet in the infantry and later as interpreter, and another three in Persia. He published a number of well-received translations of Persian literary classics and wrote several books on the cities of India. - Some smudges and spotting, frontispiece portraits pulled loose from the title page, but still attached to the endleaves. The bindings show some wear, the first volume with some stains and scratches and one headband nearly detached. Overall in very good condition. - Blumhardt, A supplementary catalogue of Hindi books in the library of the British Museum, col. 80.          Floral Designs for the Table

1877. PERKINS, John. Floral Designs for the Table; being Directions for its ornamentation with leaves, flowers, & fruit. With Classified lists of suitable plants, berries, and leaves, and twenty-four original coloured designs.38, [2] pp. Illustrated with 24 chromolithographic plates. Title printed in red and black.Oblong 4to., 208 x 330 mm, bound in publisher's gilt decorated cloth, endpapers renewed. London: Wyman & Sons, 1877.Only edition of a rare Victorian manual for floral table decoration, containing 24 lithographic designs for floral table settings. Perkins is described on the title page as the "head gardener for twenty-nine years to the late and present Lord Henniker." Chapters and illustrations are devoted to tables for dinner, luncheon and breakfast in various seasons, a cricket luncheon table, a wedding breakfast table, a "harvest home, dinner, or supper table," a hunt breakfast and a Christmas dinner. Each table setting is meticulously organized with numbered settings left blank for lamps, vases, confectionery, etc. (the actual place settings were arranged around these central decorations). Perkins describes the plants used and the details of their disposition, and the preliminary matter includes lists of plants which produce berries and ornamental leaves, as well as "generic" plants suitable for decoration. The decorations are marvelously ingenious and varied, ranging from star clusters composed of thistle leaves with roses at center - "the emblem of England centrally placed on the emblem of Scotland" for an appropriate dinner or luncheon; to a Christmas-like wreath of ferns surrounding smaller wreaths with begonias and chrysanthemums for a winter breakfast. One dinner table has the word "Welcome" spelled out in ivy and geraniums. Plants are appropriate for the occasion: stag's horn fern, hare's foot fern and foxgloves for the hunt table, mistletoe, small apples, fine-leaved ivy and winter cherries for Christmas, and so forth. Altogether the book evokes the warm and well-fed upstairs-downstairs world of the English country house. The illustrations defy verbal description and must be seen. Half-title a bit soiled, one or two small marginal tears, binding somewhat soiled, edges rubbed.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, or What Alice Found There (PRESENTATION COPY) Alice in Wonderland

[Charles Lutwidge Dodgson]. THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, or what Alice Found There. London: Macmillan, 1877. Early Edition, published five years after the first edition. PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR TO THIS NEPHEW, inscribed on the half-title: "Bertram James Collingwood/ from his affte. Uncle/ the Author/ August. 7. 1878." Original cloth, all edges gilt. GOOD only, having endured old and inexpert attempts at repair to the spine and inner hinges which appear to have been accomplished during the 1920s if not before. There is some smudging to the last eight pages but the covers are relatively clean. While not glistening with eye appeal, this is an important copy having been presented to one of the author's two beloved nephews (the other became his biographer). Bertram James Collingwood [1871- 1934] shared his uncle's love for mathematics and logic (illuminating letters between the two which discuss these subjects can be found in various institutions). When Dodgson made his funeral arrangements, he arranged for Bertram to receive (in 1898) that portion of his library related to Mathematics, Science, and Medicine. Like his uncle, Collingwood became a professor and had a brilliant career at University (Cambridge) but, unlike his uncle, he was a fanatical sportsman and is best known today for having donated the "Collingwood Cup" which is still the championship trophy for Irish University Football, celebrating its 100th birthday in 2014. While we have seen numerous copies of the author's inscribed books, those actually presented to members of his family are highly uncommon, especially in original cloth. In a splendid new quarter-morocco slipcase.

Autograph Letter Signed, 2pp on one folded 8vo sheet, Walingford, June 29, n.y

To Bertie, British theater producer and entrepreneur Bertie Alexander Meyer (1877-1967), Christie writes that she would be fine giving her novel "Ten Little Niggers" "a new lease of life. I don't know what production difficulties there are or if it 'dates' - Anyway talk it over with Edmund Cork [Christie's agent] ...." She signs, "Agatha." This comment suggests that she is writing during the period 1939-1943 as "The Little Niggers" was published as a novel in 1939, with the U.S. edition being called "The Little Indians." Her first foray into adapting one of her novels into a play was with this title, it eventually being performed in the West End in 1943 under the title "And Then There Were None." In 1944, the show opened on Broadway under the title "Ten Little Indians" and in 1945 the American film premiered as "And Then There Were None. The West End premiere was presented by Bertie Meyer at the St. James Theatre. He managed the German Theatre in London, became business manager for Charles Frohman, managed the Queen's Theatre, and in 1913 became business manager of the Globe Theatre. He managed many theaters in London during his life, and in 1930, the Cambridge Theatre was built for him. In addition to these references, Christie mentions her agent, Edmund Cork, as the person to whom Meyer should speak. "He arranges all these things and knows far more about my affairs than I do."

         Floral Designs for the Table

1877. PERKINS, John. Floral Designs for the Table; being Directions for its ornamentation with leaves, flowers, & fruit. With Classified lists of suitable plants, berries, and leaves, and twenty-four original coloured designs. 38, [2] pp. Illustrated with 24 chromolithographic plates. Title printed in red and black. Oblong 4to., 208 x 330 mm, bound in publisher's gilt decorated cloth, endpapers renewed. London: Wyman & Sons, 1877. |~||~||~||~| Only edition of a rare Victorian manual for floral table decoration, containing 24 lithographic designs for floral table settings.

Slave Trade. No. 4 (1877). Correspondence Respecting the Seizure of Slaves on board the "Rokeby" and "Koina" by her Majesty's Ship "Rifleman".

London, Harrison and Sons, 1877. - Folio (210 x 320 mm). 16 pp. Cloth-covered spine. Rare documentary material on the interception of the ships and the seizure of slaves on board. British-operated ships continuously carried hajjis between Jeddah and ports in the Gulf, and the steamers were often used for the transport of slaves, sometimes with the cognizance of the captain. "The system of issuing tickets by the agents of British vessels at Jeddah without any name being inserted thereon, and the absence of passenger lists, no doubt render it extremely difficeult for the masters of ships to ascertain whether any of their passengers are slaves; and [.] it is one which cannot but place the gravest obstacles in our way in the suppression of the Slave Trade [.] The majority of the inhabitants of the Hedjaz and Yemen, from highest to the lowest, are interested in the Slave Trade, domestic slaves being a matter of necessity, servants not being procurable, what few there are bad [.] The Mahommedans consider the institution of slavery to be one of mutual benefit, and the slaves are geenrally the best dressed and best fed members of the household [.] It is very difficult to make any Mahommedan consider that slavery is a crime. He usually contends that the negro is recued from barbarism, and is taught the Mahommedan religion, and on that ground he defends the system; and indeed, he regards himself somewhat in the light of a missionary, and thinks he is extending his faith. The question is, therefore, beset with some difficulty [.]". - Occasional edge repairs. OCLC 872281698 (Internet resource only). [Attributes: Hard Cover]
