         Floral Designs for the Table

1877. PERKINS, John. Floral Designs for the Table; being Directions for its ornamentation with leaves, flowers, & fruit. With Classified lists of suitable plants, berries, and leaves, and twenty-four original coloured designs.38, [2] pp. Illustrated with 24 chromolithographic plates. Title printed in red and black.Oblong 4to., 208 x 330 mm, bound in publisher's gilt decorated cloth, endpapers renewed. London: Wyman & Sons, 1877.Only edition of a rare Victorian manual for floral table decoration, containing 24 lithographic designs for floral table settings. Perkins is described on the title page as the "head gardener for twenty-nine years to the late and present Lord Henniker." Chapters and illustrations are devoted to tables for dinner, luncheon and breakfast in various seasons, a cricket luncheon table, a wedding breakfast table, a "harvest home, dinner, or supper table," a hunt breakfast and a Christmas dinner. Each table setting is meticulously organized with numbered settings left blank for lamps, vases, confectionery, etc. (the actual place settings were arranged around these central decorations). Perkins describes the plants used and the details of their disposition, and the preliminary matter includes lists of plants which produce berries and ornamental leaves, as well as "generic" plants suitable for decoration. The decorations are marvelously ingenious and varied, ranging from star clusters composed of thistle leaves with roses at center - "the emblem of England centrally placed on the emblem of Scotland" for an appropriate dinner or luncheon; to a Christmas-like wreath of ferns surrounding smaller wreaths with begonias and chrysanthemums for a winter breakfast. One dinner table has the word "Welcome" spelled out in ivy and geraniums. Plants are appropriate for the occasion: stag's horn fern, hare's foot fern and foxgloves for the hunt table, mistletoe, small apples, fine-leaved ivy and winter cherries for Christmas, and so forth. Altogether the book evokes the warm and well-fed upstairs-downstairs world of the English country house. The illustrations defy verbal description and must be seen. Half-title a bit soiled, one or two small marginal tears, binding somewhat soiled, edges rubbed.

THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, or What Alice Found There (PRESENTATION COPY) Alice in Wonderland

[Charles Lutwidge Dodgson]. THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, or what Alice Found There. London: Macmillan, 1877. Early Edition, published five years after the first edition. PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR TO THIS NEPHEW, inscribed on the half-title: "Bertram James Collingwood/ from his affte. Uncle/ the Author/ August. 7. 1878." Original cloth, all edges gilt. GOOD only, having endured old and inexpert attempts at repair to the spine and inner hinges which appear to have been accomplished during the 1920s if not before. There is some smudging to the last eight pages but the covers are relatively clean. While not glistening with eye appeal, this is an important copy having been presented to one of the author's two beloved nephews (the other became his biographer). Bertram James Collingwood [1871- 1934] shared his uncle's love for mathematics and logic (illuminating letters between the two which discuss these subjects can be found in various institutions). When Dodgson made his funeral arrangements, he arranged for Bertram to receive (in 1898) that portion of his library related to Mathematics, Science, and Medicine. Like his uncle, Collingwood became a professor and had a brilliant career at University (Cambridge) but, unlike his uncle, he was a fanatical sportsman and is best known today for having donated the "Collingwood Cup" which is still the championship trophy for Irish University Football, celebrating its 100th birthday in 2014. While we have seen numerous copies of the author's inscribed books, those actually presented to members of his family are highly uncommon, especially in original cloth. In a splendid new quarter-morocco slipcase.

Autograph Letter Signed, 2pp on one folded 8vo sheet, Walingford, June 29, n.y

To Bertie, British theater producer and entrepreneur Bertie Alexander Meyer (1877-1967), Christie writes that she would be fine giving her novel "Ten Little Niggers" "a new lease of life. I don't know what production difficulties there are or if it 'dates' - Anyway talk it over with Edmund Cork [Christie's agent] ...." She signs, "Agatha." This comment suggests that she is writing during the period 1939-1943 as "The Little Niggers" was published as a novel in 1939, with the U.S. edition being called "The Little Indians." Her first foray into adapting one of her novels into a play was with this title, it eventually being performed in the West End in 1943 under the title "And Then There Were None." In 1944, the show opened on Broadway under the title "Ten Little Indians" and in 1945 the American film premiered as "And Then There Were None. The West End premiere was presented by Bertie Meyer at the St. James Theatre. He managed the German Theatre in London, became business manager for Charles Frohman, managed the Queen's Theatre, and in 1913 became business manager of the Globe Theatre. He managed many theaters in London during his life, and in 1930, the Cambridge Theatre was built for him. In addition to these references, Christie mentions her agent, Edmund Cork, as the person to whom Meyer should speak. "He arranges all these things and knows far more about my affairs than I do."

London: Wyman & Sons, 1877. |~||~||~||~| Only edition of a rare Victorian manual for floral table decoration, containing 24 lithographic designs for floral table settings.

Autograph Letter Signed, 2pp on one folded 8vo sheet, Walingford, June 29, n.y.

      - To Bertie, British theater producer and entrepreneur Bertie Alexander Meyer (1877-1967), Christie writes that she would be fine giving her novel "Ten Little Niggers" "a new lease of life. I don't know what production difficulties there are or if it 'dates' - Anyway talk it over with Edmund Cork [Christie's agent] ." She signs, "Agatha." This comment suggests that she is writing during the period 1939-1943 as "The Little Niggers" was published as a novel in 1939, with the U.S. edition being called "The Little Indians." Her first foray into adapting one of her novels into a play was with this title, it eventually being performed in the West End in 1943 under the title "And Then There Were None." In 1944, the show opened on Broadway under the title "Ten Little Indians" and in 1945 the American film premiered as "And Then There Were None.

THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, or What Alice Found There (Sequel to Alice's Adventures In Wonderland

Macmillan 1877 - Carroll, Lewis [Charles Lutwidge Dodgson]. GOOD only, having endured old and inexpert attempts at repair to the spine and inner hinges which appear to have been accomplished around the 1920s if not before. In a new custom quarter-morocco slipcase. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Slave Trade. No. 4 (1877). Correspondence Respecting the Seizure of Slaves on board the "Rokeby" and "Koina" by her Majesty's Ship "Rifleman".

London, Harrison and Sons, 1877. - Folio (210 x 320 mm). 16 pp. Cloth-covered spine. Rare documentary material on the interception of the ships and the seizure of slaves on board. British-operated ships continuously carried hajjis between Jeddah and ports in the Gulf, and the steamers were often used for the transport of slaves, sometimes with the cognizance of the captain. "The system of issuing tickets by the agents of British vessels at Jeddah without any name being inserted thereon, and the absence of passenger lists, no doubt render it extremely difficeult for the masters of ships to ascertain whether any of their passengers are slaves; and [.] it is one which cannot but place the gravest obstacles in our way in the suppression of the Slave Trade [.] The majority of the inhabitants of the Hedjaz and Yemen, from highest to the lowest, are interested in the Slave Trade, domestic slaves being a matter of necessity, servants not being procurable, what few there are bad [.] The Mahommedans consider the institution of slavery to be one of mutual benefit, and the slaves are geenrally the best dressed and best fed members of the household [.] It is very difficult to make any Mahommedan consider that slavery is a crime. He usually contends that the negro is recued from barbarism, and is taught the Mahommedan religion, and on that ground he defends the system; and indeed, he regards himself somewhat in the light of a missionary, and thinks he is extending his faith. The question is, therefore, beset with some difficulty [.]". - Occasional edge repairs. OCLC 872281698 (Internet resource only). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

         Canterbury Cricket Week, 1877.

Barraud & Jerrard London 1877 - Carbon print with composite photographic portraits mounted on boar; surface a bit rubbed. Dimensions: 1060 by 680mm. (41.75 by 26.75 inches). A large print in an uncommon photographic technique, where the portraits are photographed and pasted on a sketchy background. Wisden, the Cricketer's Almanac, reported on the 1877 Canterbury Cricket Week that 'All agreed [ ] in high character and county influence, the gatherings of 1877 on old St. Lawrence were never surpassed.' This large print presents that zenith of a cricketing festival that was founded in 1842 and is the oldest of its type in England, surviving to this day. The cricketers and county society on St Lawrence cricket ground certainly attest to the high esteem and societal character of cricketing weeks during the later Victorian period, against a painted background showing Canterbury cathedral and sumptuous gazebos from which high society would view the games. According to Wisden, W.G. Grace put in a particularly sterling performance after lunch on Thursday, 9th August, taking 6 wickets for England vs. Kent. Grace features at the forefront of the print.

L'Art Arabe d'après les monuments du Kaire depuis le VIIe siècle jusqu'la fin du XVIIIe.

Paris, Morel, [1869-]1877. - 1 volume of text (4to) and 3 vols. of plates (large folio). Text: 1 bl. f., title leaf, viii, 296 pp., 1 bl. f. With 34 lithogr. plates (all with tissue guards) and 73 text illustrations. Half morocco with giltstamped title to gilt spine. Spine rebacked. Plate volumes all with half title, title, list of contents and a total of 200 engraved plates (130 of which are chromolithographs and 48 tinted lithographs). Plate volumes bound uniformly with text volume in giltstamped half morocco with cloth covers. Very scarce first edition of this splendid, unsurpassed standard work on Islamic art. Prisse d'Avennes spent many years in Egypt after 1826, first as an engineer in the service of Mehmet Ali. After 1836 he explored Egypt disguised as an Arab and using the name Edris Effendi; during this period he carried out archaeological excavations in the valley of the Nile. In 1860, Prisse d'Avennes returned to France with a wealth of documentation and drawings, which he subsequently had reproduced by specially trained draughtsmen and published in this monumental set. "'Arab Art', however, is more than a monument to the author's tenacity, skill, and devotion. For the historian of architecture, it is a precise source, a unique documentary record [.] On an entirely different level, Prisse d'Avennes has provided today's architects, designers, artists, and illustrators with some of the finest examples of measured drawings, pattern details, and illustrations of selected aspects of the built environment of a medieval Islamic city. But 'Arab Art' is not merely an exercise in architectural description. Prisse d'Avennes writes about and records in the plates art forms ranging from elaborately decorated tiles to carpets and fabrics, to Korans and illuminated manuscripts. His text examines how these objects were made and the way they were used, and describes the value placed on them by contemporary society. The result is that his book offers invaluable glimpses of aspects of Arab life as they were viewed by a sympathetic West European" (preface to the 1963 London edition). - Beautiful, complete set (the last copy sold at auction was incomplete). Text and plates uncommonly clean and in an excellent state of preservation throughout, in contrast to the known copies in libraries and in institutional possession. Ibrahim-Hilmy II, 138-140.          Certificate awarded to an Australian winemaker at the 1877 Metropolitan Intercolonial Exhibition, Sydney

Sydney: printed by S.T. Leigh, 1870 but dated, 1877. Colour lithograph with manuscript additions, 490 x 370 mm., a few closed tears and a little foxing, good condition overall. Honourable mention for a full bodied wine. Uncommon relic of Australian winemaking in the 1870's, a certificate awarded at the Sydney Intercolonial Exhibition of 1877 to winemaker Conrad Sohninger of Orange for his 'full bodied white wine'.For Australian agriculturalists, especially those who produced goods for ready export (such as winemakers), the Intercolonial exhibitions were an opportunity to reach hitherto inaccessible markets. The Melbourne Intercolonial Exhibition of 1866-1867 had been a great success, and the decision to stage a similar event in Sydney from 1870 onwards was motivated (in part at least) by rivalry between the two colonies. The grand spectacle of public exhibitions arose from precedents in England and Europe, as revealed in a Sydney Morning Herald of October 1870: 'This exhibition was called into existence under the auspices of the Agricultural Society of New South Wales, and it has proved a splendid success. It has been to this colony what the Great Exhibition of 1851 was to England - what the Exposition Universelle of Paris was to France in 1862. It has attracted large numbers of people from all parts of New South Wales, and also from other colonies of Australasia.'.

1877. CALDWELL, J.A. Caldwell's Illustrated Historical Centennial Atlas of Washington County. By J. A. Caldwell. 228 pp. Illustrated with over 100 maps and views. Tall folio, 445 x 355 mm, bound in original publisher's boards, rebacked in black cloth with a red cloth label. Pittsburgh: Otto Krebs, 1876. |~||~||~||~||~| An impressive example of nineteenth-century American naive bookmaking at its very best, engraved, lithographed and printed by Otto Krebs, the prolific illustrator of Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania during this period of great industrial and agricultural growth in the region. There are five large maps; one each of Pittsburgh and Cincinnati, two of Washington County, one of Pennsylvania and one of the United States. There are also 44 maps of towns and villages, 31 maps of townships. However, the most intriguing element of the atlas is the presence of over 228 views of farms, factories, stores and churches which offer a unique vision of all aspects of life in 19th century Pennsylvania. Pastoral scenes of rolling farm country populated by farmers, men and women in horse drawn carriages, churchgoers, sheep, cows, and all elements of agricultural industry enliven these quintessential lithographs of nineteenth-century Americana. Uncommon in US institutions, with only 9 recorded in OCLC. Most copies having been segmented for the attractive individual views and framed separately. Subject to a facsimile edition in 1976. With several small professional paper repairs to margins, but still a very good copy of a book rarely found in acceptable condition.
