         Harold, a Drama

London: Henry S. King, 1877. 8vo. Presentation binding of crushed green morocco, gilt, silk doublures. Rebacked, minor rubbing. 8vo. The dedication copy of the first edition, inscribed "Poeta poetae [poet to poet]" to Lord Lytton. The recipient was Edward Robert Bulwer Lytton, first Earl of Lytton (1831-1891), described on the printed leaf of dedication as Viceroy and Governor-General of India, a post he had just assumed. Lord Lytton was, as Tennyson's inscription indicates, a poet of considerable ability and reputation; his earliest works, published under the pseudonym "Owen Meredith," are in the manner of Browning. In his printed text Tennyson explains that his verse drama was in part inspired by a novel on the same subject by Lord Lytton's father, Edward Bulwer-Lytton. This work was Harold, or the Last of the Saxon Kings (1848); as Tennyson points out, the novel was dedicated to Tennyson's uncle. Wise 131; Tinker 2091

Hutchings' Tourist Guide to the Yosemite Valley and the Big Tree Groves for the Spring and Summer of 1877.

San Francisco: A. Roman & Co., 1877. 115 pp. + advertisements. Approximately 4 1/2 x 6 1/2"; First edition. Green cloth with gilt lettering on cover along with blind-rules, advertisement for this title on purple paper prior to title page and frontispiece, two-page map of Yosemite and Bay Area intact and in fine condition, some bubbling under cloth covers and corner bumping, light foxing to pages, otherwise in near fine condition. James Mason Hutchings (1820 - 1902) was born in England but came to the U.S., and eventually ended up in California during the gold rush, where he became wealthy as a miner. He became one of the first to settle in Yosemite and published a magazine called "Hutchings' Illustrated California Magazine" that described the Sierras and Yosemite in glowing terms. Yosemite Valley became a state park in 1864. Always a promoter of the park, and himself, this guide book is aimed at telling prospective visitors how Mr. Hutchings would go about showing tourists the beauty of the park "pleasantly, intelligently, economically, and to the best possible advantage". His importance in the valley led him to interact and connect with some very important people in Yosemite history, namely John Muir, James McCauley, and Galen Clark

Trois contes. Un coeur simple. La légende de Saint-Julien l'Hospitalier. Hérodias.

Paris, G. Charpentier, 1877. - In-12, [4]-246-[2] pages. Bel exemplaire. Non rogné. Vicaire III, 730. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Plats conservés. - - - Étienne Eugène Azam (28 May 1822 - 16 December 1899) was a French surgeon from Bordeaux who is chiefly remembered for his work in psychology, particularly a case involving a female patient he named "Félida X" who seemed to have "alternating personalities", or what Azam referred to as doublement de la vie. Over a number of years Azam studied Félida's psychological profile and from his research published three reports. He described Félida as a hysterical patient who had a serious and sad (normal) state, along with a merry and generous state. He analyzed these two states as two distinct, separate personalities that seemed to be unaware of the other. The case of Félida X is one of the earliest documented descriptions of what would later be called a multiple personality disorder. At the time, this situation garnered interest in the medical community, and created several puzzling questions in regards to the concept of Self, as well as to the definition of personal ego. Additionally from a quasi-religious context, the concept of multiple personalities was contrary to the paranormal belief system of Spiritualism (religious movement), which had a large following in the 19th century. Architecture in Ancient Rome - Alma-Tadema, 1877.

Prijs: € 750,- (incl. lijst).

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1877 - 1877 Original Wisden Rebound with Covers

1877. This 1877 Wisden was rebound a little time ago in brown boards with a green leather spine and corners. The original wrappers have been preserved and are in excellent, unrestored, clean condition. There are are one or two small marks to the front and rear boards. The spine has the title and year in gilt and an old owner's initials at the base of the spine. Internally, the book is in fabulous condition. The wrappers are complete, unrestored with just the odd tiny mark. The remaining contents are complete, original, unmarked and in fine condition. I suspect that the book was rebound quite some time ago and as a result the original contents and wrappers have been brilliantly preserved. A really nice example.

Andersen's Library. [Cover title]: Stories from Hans Andersen. (Six volumes)

New York: James Miller. 1877. Six volumes. 12mo. Illustrated. Brownish-purple decorated cloth stamped in gilt and black. Each volume with the small uniform bookseller's stamp on the front pastedown, boards a trifle rubbed, a lovely and uniform about fine set. Each volume with a separate title page usually featuring the most famous story in that volume. While by no means the first American printings of most of the stories, likely one of the first multi-volume sets to contain a large selection: 91 of his most beloved fables and tales. Andersen had died in 1875. We could find no library that held all six volumes. A handsome little set. .
