LAVATER, Ludovicus.
Rare work on the apparition of phantoms De spectris, lemuribus et magnis atque insolitis fragoribus, variisque praesagitionibus quae plerunque obitum hominum, magnas clades, mutationesque imporium praecedunt.
Geneva, Eustathius Vignon, 1575. . 8vo. Later overlapping vellum, ms. ink title on spine. Woodcut vignette on title. (16), 272 pp. . Rare edition on apparitions of ghosts, fantoms and spirits and the hearing of strange noises and happening of inexplicable events and peculiar accidents as they often occur when a - famous - person dies. The work was first published in 1570 by Jean Crespin, also in Geneva. Most probably our 1575 copy is a second issue of this first edition, because both copies have exact the same collation and our copy even has the vignette of Jean Crespin on the title-page. After this and in the next century many editions were published of this charming and very interesting book, among which were a French, a German and an English translation. Ludwig Lavater (1527-1586) was a Swiss protestant theologian who published many exegetist and pious works. Good copy. Adams L300; Caillet 6237; Dorbon 2509 ("tres rare").
