Nicolaus Lyranus (Vieille Lyre, Normandy, ca 1270 - 1349) was a French Franciscan, a doctor at the Sorbonne in Paris and one of the foremost medieval exegetes. His main work, the "Postillae perpetuae in universam S. Scripturam", was the first printed Bible commentary. Nicolai's exegesis was strongly influenced by the commentaries of St. Thomas of Aquino. The Editio Princeps appeared in 1471 in Rome, and was reprinted many times. The "Postilla" remained the most influential exegesis-manual in the next centuries and Luther used it too. A fine leaf.
