DE MAGISTRIS, GIANCINTO:
Relatione della Christianità di Maduré fatta da padri missionarii della Compagnia di Giesú della provincia del Malavàr. Roma, per Angelo Bernabae del Verme, 1661.
Pp. xvi, 255, 254-286, 285-385, (3). Contemporary limp vellum, covers gilt ruled with floral ornaments at corner, spine ruled in gilt and with title in manuscript (one tear neatly repaired). Early ownership inscription of a convent in lower margin of title page and an early inscription "de don Geronimo" on front endpaper. First edition. Giacinto de Magistris, an Italian Jesuit, worked in India for 20 years before returning to Rome in 1660. This work was a call to his confreres to enlist for service in Madura, Tanjore, and other places in southern and eastern India. In addition he provided Europe with an update of events in Madura as well as in other less known places. He also portrayed the difficulties faced by the missions at Madura and Tanjore between 1656 and 1659 and the disruptions brought on by the wars of Tirumala Nayak of Madura with Vijayanagar, Bijaput-Golconda and Mysore, and by the evil disturbances. Partly with some minor browning but overall a very attractive copy. Carayon 994. Streit (1929) 451. Donald Lach & Edwin J. Van Kley, Asia, p. 382 and 3:2, pp. 1057-63 & 1097-8. De Backer & Sommervogel V, 313-4.
