"Ornithology of the United States, and British and Russian America" in: United States Magazine: New Series, volume III, No. 1 - volume IV, No. 1

      New York: J.M. Emerson & Co., July, 1856-January, 1857. 5 parts in one volume. 8vo., (10 x 6 3/8 inches). 16 wood-engraved illustrations in the text of American birds. Modern half red morocco, gilt, original wrappers bound in. Provenance: with the 20th-century bookplate of Daniel Webster Evans. With an autograph letter tipped-in at the beginning, signed by Cassin, dated Philadelphia 12th October 1857, 2 leaves blue ruled 8vo., written on rectos only, to Mr. Lawrence [probably fellow ornithologist George Newbold Lawrence (1806-1895)], and concerning descriptions of the species of Larus (gull) he has found in Jean Cabanis "Journal for Orithology" for July 1855. Also his distress at having been summarily dismissed from an official post by one Mr. Baker "- he is a stranger here and does not appear to be quite aware of the usages of respectable people - I do not care particularly about the office and have taken but little pains about it but I do exceedingly dislike the idea of having been dismissed in so summary a and intend to make some defense..." The five parts of Cassin's "Ornithology...," and all issued in this journal, are for July, August, September, December 1856 and January 1857. The birds depicted are the Turkey Buzzard, the Carrion Crow, Burrough's Vulture, the California Vulture, the Mexican Eagle, the American Golden Eagle, the Ring-tailed Eagle, the Northern Sea-eagle, the Bald Eagle, the Whit-headed Eagle, the Washington Eagle, the Fish Hawk, the American Osprey, the Swallow-tailed Hawk, the Fork-tailed Hawk, the White-tailed Hawk, the Mississippi Kite, Harris's Buzzard, the Hook-billed Hawk, and the Marsh Eagle. Cassin's "Illustrations of the Birds of California, Texas, Oregon, British, and Russian America (1856), in which he described birds newly identified since the publication of John James Audubon's Birds of America two decades before, was first published in parts between July 1853 and June 1855 (with a title-page issued in 1856).
