Minor worming in outer margins, never affecting text. Overall a good copy. ---- FIRST and ONLY EDITION. Proposed reforms to the Companhia Geral da Agricultura das Vinhas do Alto Douro, also known as the Real Companhia Velha, which exercised a virtual monopoly of the Port wine trade for over 100 years. The company had been founded in 1756 in an effort by the Marquês de Pombal to limit the British influence on the Port wine trade. It gained something of a monopoly until its exclusive privileges were extinguished in 1865. During the more than a century of preponderance there were a number of attempts to reduce its influence, especially by liberals in sympathy with the middle and lower classes. This pamphlet proposes the abolition of the three key exclusive privileges of the company, over the production and distribution of Agua-ardentes (brandies, bagaços and bagacieras), the consumption of wine in Brazil, and the provision of wine to taverns in Porto and its surrounding districts. The commission's petition is dated 12 October 1821, and is signed in print and the end by Manoel Alves da Cruz as President, Joaquim da Costa Lima e Cunha, Antonio Ribeiro Braga, Francisco josé de Barros Lima, Christiano Nicolau Copke, Arnaldo VanZeller, Antonio Maya, Joaquim José de Figueiredo, Antonio Manoel dos Santos, José Henriques Soares, and Manoel Joaquim Maya as commissioners, and José Mendes Braga as Secretary. The extinction of the Companhias do Gram-Pará, Maranhão, Pernambuco, e Paraíba is mentioned on p. 5.---- Goldsmiths'-Kress 23489.11. Kress, @Luso-Brazilian Economic Literature Before 1850, p. 13.
