GWINNETT, RICHARD AND ELIZABETH THOMAS.
Pylades and Corinna: or Memoirs of the Lives, Amours, and Writings of Richard Gwinnett Esq.and Elizabeth Thomas. To which is prefixed, The Life of Corinna. WITH: The Honourable Lovers: or, the Second and Last Volume.
London E Curll -32 1736 - 2 volumes, 8vo, pp xi, , -352: xv, , 268, , 96, with portrait frontispiece [of Gwinnett] in volume one [?only], bound in contemporary calf, later red labels, rubbed, chipped at spine ends, joints repaired, library stamp to front paste-downs and very faint old stamp to title verso, else sound clean and crisp internally, SECOND EDITION OF VOLUME ONE, FIRST EDITION OF VOLUME TWO; a very rare work, especially complete with the second volume. Gwinnett is an obscure amateur dramatist whose amusing and quite accessibly comedy 'The Country' Squire or a Christmas Gambol', is printed with separate title at the end of volume two. Volume one was first published in 1731 by Curll to whom Elizabeth Thomas, a minor poet, had sold her correspodence with Pope; she may have been cashing in on her other correspondence here, but she died the same year. The first volume had only 287 pages in its first printing in 1731, so this second edition may have been considerably enlarged by Curll; this would be significant because it is very rare -ESTC records only the Boldeian in the UK, though 6 copies [can this be right?] in the US. The second volume appears to have a portrait in the BL copy, but not in the Bodelian which is available to view online [with an old manuscript note on the rarity of this second volume]. In any case this is a very rare and curious collection of letters, poetry and a variety of prose from the early 18th Century. [Attributes: First Edition]
