Fernandez de Navarrete, M.

Colección de los viajes y descubrimientos que hicieron por mar los españoles desde fines del siglo XV, con varios documentos inéditos concernientes a la historia de la marina castellana 2º edición

Imprenta Nacional 1829/59, Madrid - "The author rescued the earliest and rarest records of American discovery". 5vols; 4to; ¾ XIX century Spanish calf, 3 maps and 2 plates (complete). Mixed edition (as usual) of this important work. Volumes 1, 2 are second editions- vols. 3, 4 & 5 are firsts. Fine set of this relation of Spanish voyages from the end of the fifteenth century, containing the text of many historical and hitherto unpublished documents referring to the discovery of America. The folding maps depict (1) North America and the Atlantic, showing the route followed by Christopher Columbus; (2) Tierra Firme and the West Indies, showing Columbus’s course; and (3) Southern Florida, Cuba and Tierre Firme. The fourth volume, which refers to the voyages and discoveries of Magellan and Juan Sebastian de Elcano, in the Moluccas, contains an engraved portrait of the former, and an illustration of a statue of the latter. The fifth volume treats of expeditions to the Moluccas and the voyages of Loaisa and Saavedra, and contains the text of many original documents relating to these expeditions. Mr. Rich (Vol. II., p. 179,) devotes almost a page of encomium to this valuable work. Brunet characterizes it as an "important collection," and Washington Irving drew from it most of the material which forms the basis of his "Life of Columbus." It contains the original diary of the voyages of Columbus, compiled by B. de las Casas, the expeditions of Amerigo Vespucci, and the subsequent voyages of the Spaniards, taken from inedited manuscripts or reprinted from rare printed works; also many singular and curious documents concerning the history and manners of the period. It may safely be asserted that the enterprise of this laborious compiler has rescued from oblivion the earliest and rarest records of American discovery. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
