North Prospect of the Ruin, in the Gardens of Kew. W. Chambers Architectus.
Jos: Kirby delint. W: Woollett sculpt. [London, 1763.] Hand-coloured copper engraving, 320 x 450mm. 12½ x 17¾". The ruined arch in Kew Gardens, designed by architect Sir William Chambers (1726 - 1796), with trees and foliage either side. The arch features a classical vase and part of a pediment atop, and a term in a niche on the left; a statue visible through the arch. From Chambers' 'Plans, Elevations, Sections, and Perspective Views of the Gardens and Buildings at Kew, in Surrey, the Seat of H.R.H. the Princess Dowager of Wales'. After Joshua Kirby (1716 - 1774), drawing master to George III as Prince of Wales, friend of Hogarth and Gainsborough. Fagan 48, IV. See BL 551.f.10.(1.) 56.i.3.
