Magnus, Olaus
(Untitled) Scandinavia
Basel 1567 - 360 x 520 mm - woodcut - B/W as issued - no text in verso. Good print and complete copy of the map, that is with blank margin all around (total 400 x 525 mm) Two pinholes, slight discontinuity where map folded double in the book, old support of part of one margin.* This is the best book size map of Scandinavia made by Olaus Magnus, whose famous wall map of Scandinavia appeared in 1539 in Venice. That map, of which only two copies are known to survive, is unobtainable. It is an attractive and intriguing map, signed and dated by the woodcutter Thomas Weber. The strongly presented central part is Scandinavia, where one would be surprised to find London where now is Lund. The surrounding countries are equally stylised : Baltic States, Russia, Greenland, Iceland, Scotland. The sea - as in his wallmap - is filled with sea monsters. The scales surrounding the map are based on his 1539 wall map. In longitude and latitude they are just as wrong. For example, there is other information included about the length of the days. #[707]
