Gillis Joosten Zaagman,, Amsterdam, 1687 - 4to. Decorated paper, ('Buntpapier') over boards. Title and calendar printed in red and black, large woodcut on title, 12 large woodcuts (ca. 63 x 110 mm) for each month depicting the main activities practised during this month, 12 small woodcuts of the signs of the Zodiac and larger woodcut of a Zodiac man. 16 lvs. Unrecorded edition of the popular Amsterdam almanac, compiled by Dirck Rembrantsz. van Nierop (1610-1682) and published by Gilles Joosten Zaagman. In the second half of the 17th century Zaagman held the privilege for the "comptoir" or office almanac, lucrative because it securely held a large market each year. The present quarto edition was the most serious with a calendar, including the times of the sun and moon, tides, dates of fairs, weather forecasts, monthly prognostications, etc. One quire is added with extra explanations of the almanac and calendar, time tables of post coaches, travel coaches, ships and barges, a table of money values, the opening times of the city gates, etc. The beautifully designed woodcuts at the head of each month show lovely seasonal views. Good copy.- (Later endpapers, first quire loosening, top corner of one leaf dam.). Not in STCN (only listing one copy of an editon of the Widow J. Doll); not in NCC; not in Vandenhole; cf. Salman-Verhoeven, in: Quaerendo, 23 (1993), pp. 93-114. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
