Contemporary rigid vellum over boards, spine lettered in ink, a little soiled, else virtually perfect. An excellent copy in its original condition, wide margins, slight creasing to a few folds and minor soiling, else fine. First edition, second issue ¿with the allegorical title dated 1652- of this rare biography, including extensive information on North Brazil. Finely embellished with 34 double page and folding plans, views and maps of harbours, battles, cities and customs; of particular importance those of Maastricht, Breda, Den Bosch, Wesel and those of Brazil, ¿6 plates are of Brazilian subjects (Bahia, Olinda and Recife, Rio Grande, fort of Santo Agostinho, fort of Paraiba, Arraial)¿ (Borba de Moraes), these plates represent some of the earlier views of Brazil´s coastline and cities. This biography of Frederic Henry de Nassau, ¿Prince d´Orange, gives an account of all the important events which occurred in Holland between 1627 and 1647. Among the Dutch undertakings during the government of the Prince d´Orange was the seizure of northern Brazil. The work contains a long passage about this event, illustrated with plates depicting the capture of Olinda¿. According to BdM, there are copies dated 1651, although the collation and everything else is identical to this one, dated on the allegorical engraved title ¿1652¿; this is possibly a second issue. In 1625 Frederic Henry van Nassau, Prince of Orange, succeeded his brother in the Stadtholderates; the work describes the life of this famous Dutch general. Borba de Moraes, 194.
