Belcher, Jonathan]:
AUTOGRAPH LETTER, FROM SAMUEL BICKFORD TO JONATHAN BELCHER, SIGNED BY BOTH MEN].
Concord. April 1, . 1737 - [2]pp. written on a folio sheet. Old fold marks, else very good. Belcher was colonial governor of Massachusetts and New Hampshire, and later of New Jersey. This interesting letter is addressed to Belcher as governor of New Hampshire and concerns the "swapping" of a horse, "a mair." The transaction was a bit shady and a controversy resulted, with Samuel Bickford hastening to Gov. Belcher for redress. The document is signed by Belcher on the verso. It is also signed by Richard Waldron as secretary. Belcher is remembered for leaving his library of 374 volumes to the College of New Jersey (Princeton). DAB, II, pp.143-44.
