Henri Crouzel (Translated By A.S. Worrall)

Origen

T.& T. Clark Ltd., Edinburgh 1989 - Book Description : 1989, 1st Edition cloth hardback with original dustjacket; 278 pages with 3 indices; G/G+. Born in around 185 AD, Origen of Alexandria was one of the early fathers of the Eastern Christian Church, and a theologian who was a prolific Christian writer. A controversial figure, Origen was proclaimed a heretic in 533 but later inspired the great humanists Pico della Mirandella and Erasmus. One of Origen's central beliefs was that the Bible should not be interpreted too literally, that if its text did not speak to you about how you might advance towards Christ-like perfection, you had misunderstood it. It was also his desire for others to see and hear Christ through the Bible. Professor Crouzel is one of the foremost scholar's of Origen. His book provides an orderly exposition of this early theologian's life, works, and achievements. Part 1 of the book entitled "Personality" gives a biographical account of Origen. In Part 2, Crouzel examine Origen's exegesis of scripture and his spirituality. The final part of the book deals with Origen's often controversial theology - his conception of the beginnings of mankind, the "Three Persons", and his doctrines of Purgatory, Resurrection and Apocatastasis. Professor Crouzel's principal concern has been to demonstrate Origen's orthodoxy, and to show how rewarding to the modern reader Origen's speculative theology can be.
