      London: Hutchinson & Co. (Publishers) Ltd., n.d. [1935] First edition. Octavo, pp. [1-8] 9-288 + 48-page publisher's catalogue "for the Autumn 1935" inserted at rear, original black cloth, spine panel stamped in yellow. Fifteen stories, the first ten reprinted in slightly revised form from his earlier book, MASQUERADES: STUDIES IN THE MORBID (1924). Of the five new stories, "As in a Glass Dimly" is a tale of pharaonic Egyptian haunting; "The Hospital Nurse" is a murder story; "The Lord-in-Waiting" is a haunted- house story; "The Lost Salt-Cellar" is a sentimental story of old soldiers and faded glory; "The Diplomatist's Story," is a ghost story. The author " ... spent most of his life painstakingly investigating unexplained phenomena, and collected the most fascinating in his GHOST BOOK (1955). He wrote several fictional ghost stories, which read just like his factual accounts.
