Blaeu, Willem (Guilielmus)

(Map Virginia, Chesapeake): Nova Virginiae Tabula

Amsterdam: Blaeu, 1642. Burden 193, State 2, Dutch text verso, imprint "Ex officina Guiljelmi Blaeuw", from Nieuwe Atlas. Very good condition, early color, minimal browning, nice margins, virtually no foxing. This was the first major derivative of John Smith's 1612 map of Virginia, with the image of Powhatan on the upper left inset, and based on Blaeu's use of Hondius' original 1618 plate, but altering the imprint as noted. The image measures 14.75 x 18.75 inches (37.5 x 47.5 cm). The remnants of the first imprint "Ex Officina Judoci Hondii" are still discernible, particularly underneath the "G" of Guiljelmi and just to the left of the "B" in Blaeuw..
