IMES, Birney

Juke Joint

IMES, Birney. Juke Joint. Jackson: University Press of Mississippi, (1990). Oblong quarto, originalgreen cloth, original photographic dust jacket. $450. First trade edition of this intriguing photo-essay on the juke joints of the Mississippi Delta country, signed by Imes on the title page, with 60 color plates. "Imes has focused his camera on nearly empty rooms, yet these bluesy, almost peopleless photographs present black cafes, roadhouses, and taverns as folk art." "Growing up white in the segregated South of the 1950s, I was only vaguely aware of another culture, another world that existed in the midst of my own… In the late sixties, the veil began to part, and I started to see the richness and diversity of a culture that until then had been hidden from me." Preceded by a limited edition of 126 copies. Fine condition.
