LAWRENCE, T. E.
Seven Pillars of Wisdom.
London, Jonathan Cape, A Triumph. Large octavo, publisher’s dark green hard grain morocco, title gilt to spine, crossed swords device in gilt to the upper board, top edge gilt, the others uncut, Cockerell marbled endpapers. With a portrait frontispiece and numerous other plates, many in colour, 4 maps. Spine sunned and a little scuffed, short pull at the head-cap, light rubbing at the extremities, else very good. Third English edition, the first trade edition, fifth impression, published two months after the first. A variant issue of the fifth impression of September 1935 is bound in full blue crushed morocco, has marbled end papers same design as those of Cape limited issue but of darker hues, gilt top edge with blue & white head and tail bands. At foot of spine [pub. device] replaces the words Jonathan Cape (O'Brien). Here the leather is definitely green, the endpapers are predominately green in colour and the head- and tailbands are green and gold, rather than blue and white. Inscription to the verso of the front free endpaper reads, This book was presented to T. R. Kendrick in December 1935 as a recognition of his services. A fair copy of this unusual and uncommon variant. O’Brien A042.
