Evans, Myfanwy (Editor)

Axis : a quarterly review of contemporary abstract painting & sculpture (1935-1937, issues 1 - 8, the complete set)

Myfanwy Evans, Henley-on-Thames, England. - First Issues: January 1935, April 1935, July 1935, November 1935, Spring 1936, Summer 1936, Autumn 1936, Early Winter 1937. Quarto sized printed white soft covers with a large coloured circle on the front displaying the number of magazine issue. The set include essay contributions from: W G & M Archer, H S Ede, Myfanwy Evans, H Frankfort, Geoffrey Grigson, Will Grohmann, Helion, Eleen Holding, Anatloe Jakovski, Douglas Lord, Wassily Kandinsky, Robert Medley, George Morris, Paul Nash, Roland Penrose, J Piper, Hugh Porteus, Herbert Read, J Richards & E Holding, Herbert Tayler, J & M Thwaites, K Walsh, H Wescher, Anthony West, S Woods, James Sweeney, H Wescher. Each issue has 32pp., some have an extra 2pp. of rear ads, and each issue is profuse with b/w reproductions; issues 1, 2 4, 7, 8 have one or two in colour. Artists featured include: H Arp, W Bodmer, C Brancusi, A Calder, W Dacre, J Dismorr, C Domela, M Duchamp, H Erni, Merlyn Evans, N Gabo, A Giacometti, D Glass, J Gonzalez, J Gris, H Hartung, J Helion, B Hepworth, I Hitchens, E Holding, A Jackson, F Leger, W Kandinsky, P Klee, P Macintyre, Masson, H Moore, F McWilliam, J Miro, L Moholy-Nagy, P Mondrian, H Moore, P Nash, B Nicholson, Paalen, R Penrose, P Picasso, J Piper, C Richards, E Wadsworth, J Williams, J Woods, M Wright. Magazines generally in VERY GOOD condition throughout: secure covers, all with neat corners and edges, age-toned spines; bright, clean pages with no tears or creases; and no inscriptions or annotations to be found anywhere, apart from 'C E Rogers' in very light pencil to the upper left of front covers. There are a few minor flaws: issue 5 has a loose, but still in place, signature; issue 1 is evidently the most handled, judging by its having the highest degree of shelf wear and the most thumbed fore edge - all other magazines show only slight signs of handling. Surprisingly well preserved and exceedingly scarce as a full set. First Issues: January 1935, April 1935, July 1935, November 1935, Spring 1936, Summer 1936, Autumn 1936, Early Winter 1937. [Attributes: First Edition]
