Paris: Les Amis d'Odilon Redon / Philippe Gonin, 1935, - first edition in this ill'd book form, number 51 of 100 copies (total edition 130), signed by artist's son Ari on the justification page, with the story by Flaubert illustrated with 40 engravings (28 full-page) after Odilon Redon's three series of drawings from 1888, 1889 and 1896. This book's engravings were executed during Redon's lifetime, between 1896 and 1910. 126 leaves, printed on handmade Maillol paper with watermark; very handsomely bound in full purple morocco with the lettering and top edge gilt, dentelles with frames of double filets; spine with 5 bands; original wrappers preserved; housed in a matching slipcase; overall 15.75 x 11.75 in. (39 x 29 cm). Spine sunned to a handsome reddish-brown, otherwise as new, without the habitual foxing.
