      - A photolithographic facsimile of the two monumental wall maps by Martin Waldseemüller (1470-1521), published in 1507 and 1516. For each map, the facsimile shows a reduced overview of the entire map followed by original-size reproductions of the 12 woodcut sections from which it is assembled, all reproduced from the only surviving copies, in the library of Wolfegg castle in Württemberg. Plate 20a shows the contemporary manuscript tracing of one section of the 1516 map, with the topographic names and other texts written in, showing the extensive intended revisions to the original block. The present facsimile was prepared by Franz von Wieser of the Universität Innsbruck für historische Geographie and Joseph Fischer, the Jesuit priest who discovered both maps in 1901. The skilful reproduction was executed by the O. Consée art istitute in Munich. Prince Johannes Waldburg-Wolfegg sold the 1507 map, the oldest to include the name "America," for ten million dollars in 2003.A good copy. Binding somewhat worn, mainly on the spine and corners. A limited facsimile edtion of the map that has been called "America's birth certificate."
