Lactantius, Lucius Caecilius Firmianus (Lactantii, Lucii Coelii Firmiani)
Opera Quae Extant
Franciscum Hackium and Petrum Leffen, Lugduni Batavorum (Leiden) 1660 - [32], 938pp, [80], full contemporary vellum, title and author in manuscript to head of spine. Vellum grubby, especially spine, internally some minor browning, but generally fairly clean. Engraved title. "A Christian apologist of the fourth century . Lactantius was born a pagan and in his early life taught rhetoric in his native place . He well merits the designation of the "Christian Cicero" bestowed on him by the humanists, for he exhibits many of the shortcomings as well as the graces of his master" (Catholic Encyclopaedia). The authorship of the poem De Phoenice (p. 904-923) formerly much disputed, is now generally ascribed to Lactantius;a the poem De Pascha (p. 924-934) is by Venantius Fortunatus; the Carmen de Passione Domini (p. 935-938) has been wrongly ascribed to Lactantius (Notes from the Open Library) [Attributes: Hard Cover]
