Venice: In Aedibus Haeredum Aldi, et Andreae Soceri, Mense Septembri, 1533. Octavo, 5.9 x 3.5 inches. Second Aldine edition. [four signatures]8, a-z8, A-B8, C4. 204 numbered leaves. The last leaf of the preliminary matter is blank and present in this copy. The final leaf, C4, blank but for the Aldine device is lacking in this copy, unfortunately. This is volume one of a three volume set of the works of Ovid, the three published separately over several months. It is contains the complete text of the Metamorphoses and annotations thereon. This is a nice copy, with a little light waterstaining at the end. It is bound in quarter vellum and corners with off-white paper boards. The engraved armorial bookplate of the great collector of musical manuscripts and incunabula, Hercules de Silva is pasted inside the front board. His large collection was sold at auction in Paris on February fifteenth and sixteenth, in 1869. A Richard S. Lambert has also written his name on the front free endleaf, with the date 1920. . OOvidOs influence on Western art and literature cannot be exaggerated. The Metamorphoses is our best classical source of two hundred and fifty myths. OThe poem is the most comprehensive, creative mythological work that has come down to us from antiquity.O (Galinsky) Based on its influence, OEuropean literature and art would be poorer for the loss of the Metamorphoses than for the loss of Homer.O (Hadas) Ovid was a major inspiration for Dante, Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Milton. If Virgil is RomeOs greatest poet, Ovid is the most popular, even in his own time. Ovidian graffiti has been found on the walls of Pompeii.O (Brown, Larry A. OvidOs Metamorphoses. http://larryavisbrown.homestead.com/files/xeno.ovid1.htm)#11;#11;Aldus ManutiusO contributions to classical scholarship and the art of printing are legion. Many book lovers have collected Aldine editions, valuing them above other imprints of the same vintage. This little volume is irresistible: classical mythology, printed by the Aldine press. #11;
