After an interesting and adventurous life, including time as a slaver, Newton became an evangelical preacher and hymn writer. He is the author of Amazing Grace amongst others. The book is in the form of letters to a fellow cleric, describing his earlier life and spiritual journey. He enlisted in the English Navy and travelled to Venice, Madeira, Africa [where he encountered slave ships] and Ireland in 1750-54, suffering numerous hardships and regularly praying for deliverance.
