A remarkable piece of scholarship, the present dictionary was revered in its time and largely unreplaced until the mid nineteenth-century. The author, Joseph Baretti, is famous among other things for having been defended by both Joshua Reynolds and Topham Beauclerk at a capital trial at the Old Bailey in 1759, a case in which he was acquitted on grounds of self-defence.
