FRENCH ILLUMINATOR

Illuminated leaf from a Book of Hours. Central France (?Bourges or Tours), c.

      - Two 2-line initials in gold on coloured grounds, panel border on each side of the page composed of blue and gold acanthus and coloured flowers and leaves on pear-shaped liquid gold grounds. Size of leaf: 212 x 134mm. 24 lines of text in a lettre bātarde. 1495. The two initials introduce the two prayers Illumniatrix peccatorum and Alleviatrix peccatorum which were first added to French Books of Hours at the end of the 15th century and subsequently used in printed Horae in the 16th century. In excellent condition.
