      Publisher: Paris, 1574.4 volumes in 1, complete, French text, second Sauvage edition, Paris, Michel Sonnius, 1574. folio bound in sixes, 310 x 215 mm, 12¼ x 8¼ inches, printer's large pictorial device on title page, historiated headpieces and large initials, pages (16), 423, (29) - notes; (12), 288, (4) - notes; (8), 333; (6), 322, (2), LACKING FIRST TITLE PAGE which has been replaced by the title page to the 4th volume with "quart" of "quart volume" crudely erased in the centre, LACKING PAGES 377-380 IN VOLUME I, bound in full modern blind-panelled calf, raised bands and blind rules to spine, gilt lettered morocco label, brown speckled edges, new endpapers. First title page has small repair to lower inner edge and slight ink smudges at top outer corner, the following five leaves of prelims have repairs to lower edges, with slight loss of text on Avertissement and loss of a few letters on Contents table, light brown damp stain to lower outer corners of Volume I, varying in size, 2 small ink marks in margin, 2 brief underlinings, small ink stain to 3 pages, no loss, a little worming in some lower margins (Volumes I, II, and half of III), mostly neatly repaired, slightly affecting a few sidenotes, single holes or small tracks occasionally affect last 2 lines of text but with almost no loss of legibility, a few small chips to lower edges, repaired, occasional pale stain to margins especially on last few pages of Volume IV, light age-browning to some pages in Volume IV, upper and lower margins occasionally trimmed, occasionally shaving or removing the running title. Binding tight and firm. A good copy of an early edition, (lacking 2 leaves and first title as noted). Froissart (c. 1337 – c. 1405) was one of the most important of the chroniclers of medieval France. For centuries, Froissart's Chronicles have been recognized as the chief expression of the chivalric revival of the 14th century kingdom of England and France. His history is also one of the most important sources for the first half of the Hundred Years' War. The editor of this edition, Denis Sauvage (c. 1520-c. 1587) was a wellknown French historian, translator and philologist, historiographer to King Henri II. His edition was first published in 1559-61.
