RODGER, George
Blitz
RODGER, George. Le Blitz. (Paris): Picto, (1990). Slim, square octavo, original stiff white paper covers. $100. First edition exhibition catalogue of this photo-documentary of London under siege, with 21 full-page duotones of civilian response. From the collection of award-winning photojournalist Peter Turnley, signed by him on the title page. One of the founding members of Magnum and war correspondent for Life magazine, George Rodger gained fame as the first photographer to document the concentration camp at Bergen-Belsen in 1945. His photographs of the London blitzes capture the tenacity of the British people: "At night, Londoners took shelter in the Underground. When morning came, after a night of fire and bedlam, they quietly set about to 'tidy up.' It was 'business as usual' for the shopkeepers; the rescue workers paused only for tea." Text in French and English. Published in book form the same year. From the collection of Peter Turnley, acclaimed photojournalist for Newsweek, Life and Harper's Magazine, who has covered "almost every important international news event of the last 15 years" (New York Times), with his signature. Interior fine, light soiling to original covers.
