NEW TESTAMENT. Liturgical Epistles and Gospels. Nannini Remigio

Epistole; et evangelii, che si leggono tutto l'anno alla messa. Ridotti all' ordine del Messale nuovo. Tradotti. dal R. P. M. Remigio. cum alcune annotationi morali [etc.]

      - 4to (230 x 170mm.) [32], 683, [1]pp., many woodcut illustrations, woodcut head-pieces and initials, device on title and verso of last leaf, 17th-century italian vellum over pasteboard, some leaves in quire D, X, and Y stained & browned, some leaves shewing marks of use, title leaf and a few leaves at end repaired at edges Venice: Gabriel Giolito, 1575 Third and considerably enlarged edition of this work, originally published in 1567 by Giolito, which was 'of common and constant use amongst pious persons all over Italy' (Bongi ii, 254), and became a considerable success, being often reprinted by a variety of printers in various towns. The illustrations, which are in the Lyonnese style are horizontal (with a few exceptions) and surrounded by architectural 'fregi' or borders. They and the changes of type face make for an extremely attractive volume. Remigio Nannini was a Dominican of Florence, an immensely industrious translator, and poet. From 1569 until 1578 he was employed in Rome by Pius VI to edit the great edition of Aquinas. Bongi Annali di Gabriel Giolito de' Ferrari Rome, 1895, ii, 350-351; Censimento 16 records 6 editions from 1567 to 1594, of which 4 are from the Giolito press, but not this edition. From about 1599 Galignani of Venice printed editions (1599, 1602), the heirs of Farri produced one in 1605, in 1613/ 1614 Misserini published one, and there is an edition of 1658 published by Brigna in 1658, all in Venice. All are uncommon. Bongi indeed remarks that works of this type are often rare, because, irrespective of how many editions there are (in itself a pointer), they have been used and read (see below). Provenance:A number of inscriptions in Italian dated between 1686 and 1728 concerned with permissions granted in Bologna for the reading of the volume; Pusey House, Oxford to which given by L.O. Bigg in 1888.
