Erste mit den Holzschnitten von Vincenzo Pagani (1490-1568) illustrierte Ausgabe des Hauptwerks des aus Nikaia (heute Iznik) stammenden Cassius Dio. Von den ursprünglich achtzig Büchern, welche von der Aeneas bis ins Jahr 229 reichen, sind die Bücher 36-60 komplett als geschlossener Block überliefert, sie behandeln die Zeit vom Jahr 68 v. Chr. bis 46 n. Chr. Die Editio Princeps erschien ohne Ortsangabe 1489, die erste von Nicolaeus Leonicus Thomaeus übersetzte wurde 1526 in Venedig publiziert. - Insgesamt ein gutes Exemplar, lediglich einige Lagen gebräunt, stellenweise Stockflecken auf dem Titel und einigen Bl. STC (Italian), 217; Sander 2436; Essling II/2, 660 (vermutet Mattheo da Treviso als Künstler). The first edition with the fine woodcuts of Vincenzo Pagani of Dio Cassius' Roman History. The editio princeps of this fragmentary Greek text appeared in 1489, the first edition of Leoniceno's Italian translation was printed at Venice in 1526. This history, covering the period from 68 B.C. to 46 A.D., is especially valuable to modern historians because Dio Cassius spent most of his life in public service, holding many high government offices during the reigns of Commodos, Pertinax, Septimius Severus, and Severus Alexander. He witnessed the decay of society under Elagabalus and Caracalla's reign of terror. His insights into the workings of the Roman imperial government provide details that would not be considered important by a military man or writer of epic poetry. - Somewhat foxed and stained, few quires browned, on the whole a well-preserved copy. it [Attributes: First Edition]
